Advice on a New Set of Pistols

I have always shot a mismatched pair of Vaquero's in 44-40 and I have shot 2 handed.  I would like to have a matched set of pistols and I plan to switch to Duelist or Gunfighter next year.  I have been looking of another 4 5/8" or 5 1/2" Vaquero to match up with the ones I have but the few I have found are priced almost as much as a pair of new clones.

I want to stay with 44-40 which limits my options a little.  I am leaning toward the Taylor Smoke Wagon in 4 3/4", I would appreciate any pro's and con's with these pistols.  Is it worth the money to get the Taylor tuned version or would it be better to just buy the standard version and then have someone do the action work on them?  I read somewhere that you can use .430 bullets (unlike the Rugers) with these pistols, is that true?

Thanks

Curly

EMF Pietta makes an Alchimista II and III model that would be great for the gunfighter category with it's 60 Army grip frame and low, wide hammer.  But it's not available in 44WCF.

The original Alchimista is cataloged in 44WCF but only. In 5-1/2 and 7-1/2".  But has a tall hammer and is listed as out of stock. There are likely some in stock at distributors.

The Californian comes in 44WCF and their in house gunsmith will change out the hammers for an additional fee; I know this because I have a consecutive pair on backorder.

Now ... if they could just start with an Alchimista 44WCF and swap out the hammer.  Then make it in stainless and change it to 38WCF.

Wouldn't it be great to have high polished stainless Pietta in 38WCF or 44WCF?

How about nickel?  How about the 44WCF and 38WCF available in more models?

That was meant as a joke, thus the tongue sticking out. More options is always better; although I probably won't buy any more nickel or stainless revolvers.

I have two pairs of Taylor's Running Irons.  The first pair I bought, I spent the extra money to have them "tuned?"  I thought it was a waste of money.  One of the guns had to go back for warranty work because of light strikes.  The second set I bought I didn't waste the money on the tuning.  Out of the box, I could not tell a difference.  The non-tuned guns actually took less work to get in shape than the ones that were tuned.  Other than this marketing ploy, I can recommend Taylor's.  They always have been responsive to calls.  When I needed a part two day before a match, they over-nighted it to me, no problem.

I still think a matched pair is over rated.  I should double duelist style, and while most of my guns are Colts, none of them are in the exact same configuration.   But I've been known to pair Colt with a Smith, a Buntline with a Nagant, a Walker with an SAA, and many other configurations.   That they are different does not bother me.
