If you were making a movie

And one or more of your characters were to wear jewelry, would you use real jewelry, or costume stuff?

The movie is WHAT A WAY TO GO WHY, and in the opening credits, along with the GOWNS BY and HAIRSTYLES BY there was MISS MACLAINE'S JEWELS BY.

Just seemed sort of strange. The big piles of money weren't real money, so why would the diamonds need to be real?

Status. That’s all. It’s a big deal in Hollywood.

Whatever looks good on camera.  Mind you, where I come from, your hair can be dyed (or fake), your bosom can be augmented, but your silver and your pearls MUST be real.

Nothing says that what they supplied was real, only that it was supplied by them.
