Alpo
You got a coal or wood fired steam locomotive. You're putting a train together. Three stock cars and a passenger coach. Where would you put the passenger coach? Up at the front, behind the fuel car? Would that cause more ash and cinders to fall on the passenger coach? At the back with the stockcars up in front of it? If the stockcars held anything smelly - cattle or horses, or (God forbid) hogs - the smell would be drifting back to the coach. THE TRAIN ROBBERS just came on, and the train that pulled into town had 3 stock cars in front of the passenger coach. Just got me to wondering. Cactus Jack Calder
On a mixed train normally passenger cars were placed towards the rear of the train behind freight and baggage cars to avoid the smoke and ash/cinders. Don’t want to kill the passengers before they reach their destination. Often trains would be rated as passenger or freight and general stock cars (ie. cattle shipments) would go in the freight category. If you had a stock car for passengers personal animals (ie. Riding/Carriage horses) I believe that would have been placed last on the train.
Alpo
Horses have to be trained to jump down? Same movie. Bad guys came in on another train. They were all sitting on their horses, on flat cars. They just open the gate of the cars and the horses jumped out onto the ground. Some of them jumped right down, and others look like they had to think about it a little.
