Sgt. C.J. Sabre, SASS #46770
Heinlein described bagpipes something like "Looked and sounded like several cats stuffed into a bag and squeezed." I don't think that's the exact quote, but I don't have my copy of "Starship Trooper" handy to look it up.
Rye Miles #13621
I've read that they were originally used in battle much like the bugle calls of the Army. Awful sounding instrument in my opinion. No offense to anyone that actually plays them though, march on!!
twelve mile REB
There some tunes that only Bagpipes can play satisfactorily.
Calico Mary
some people don't care for bagpipes, but all I need to hear is the opening notes of Amazing Grace on the pipes and I immediately get tears in my eyes..... (and no, I don't mean because I don't like em....)

They were more to fire up the troops and strike fear into the enemy (or irritate them) than signaling. Bugles and drums were used for that generally.
