The kid at the end, on the bicycle, that went between the two white blocks they wouldn't bust his front wheel. I can see bad drivers being confused by this on a busy street and blocking traffic. Roads were created for automobiles, not pedestrians. Municipalities could install lights but are always looking for cheap alternatives. Some of those road surfaces are said to still exist. There is even a story about why the American Standard Railroad Gauge is 4 foot 8 & 1/2 inches between the rail heads, that maintains the “Romans did it”.
