The WORD TRAIN

Thought it might be a nice change of pace to start a sort of word puzzle for those that like to put their thinking cap on.

I came up with a thought provoking, challenging game I call The WORD TRAIN, as each subsequent creation is like adding another car to the engine.

Here is how it will work in its infancy format and will be open to suggestions by those readers wishing to participate.

I will start by placing a word on the thread as a starter word.

The goal is to take any number of letters at the tail end of the word to create a new word. The next person will then do the same to the latest iteration that was made. Here is an example of how this will work.

Initial word: LEAVE

A reader would then decide how they want to create a new word.

In this case, they have several options, such as:

LEavenue

LEAVequipment

LEAverify

Based on the first person who responds will determine what is available for the next person. Continuing the example, suppose the first person chose: LEAVequipment

Then the next options might be:

LeavEQUIPmental

LeavEQUIPMentrance

Hopefully you get the idea.

Now to make it more interesting and challenging, scores will be provided based on your decision.

2 points for every letter used in the base word;

1 point for every letter after the base word;

5 bonus points for using all the letters of the base word.

For the examples above, scores provided by each different option would be:

6 points (ave) + 3 points (nue) = 9 points for LEavenue

2 points (e) + 8 points (quipment) = 10 points for LEAVequipment

4 points (ve) + 4 points (rify) = 8 points for LEAverify

Therefore, you want to score as many points as possible.

Before you dismiss the game, you might want to try your hand at it.

I will refrain from playing myself; however, may interject (only if necessary) to make sure it plays out as intended.

By all means, comment on any improvements that will make this a fun challenge for everyone.

Updates:

Refrain from merely changing the original word by making it plural or changing the tense or adding an "ing" for example.

Also, refrain from following your own response, waiting at least until another has submitted a response.

When responding you need only CAPITALIZE the portion of the base word and lowercase the addition.

Are we supposed to ,leave all the previous up? If so that would make it

Ozark,

Not necessary.

Merely like has been done already ... CAPITALIZE the portion of the base word and lowercase the addition.

Gerrymandering = 2 (G) + 13 (errymandering) = 15 pts

And you get a G to start the next word!

Grandiloquent = 2 (G) + 12 (randiloquent) = 14 pts

Pompous or extravagant in language.

OK I admit it, I am showing off a little.

Altostratus  = 10 (ALTOS) + 6 (tratus) = 16 pts

                  or 2x2=4? (A) {used from previous word?}  maybe 18 pts?

                      Altostratus is a middle altitude cloud

If you manage to use a letter from the word in a previous posted word is it worth more?

Just a suggestion.

That’s cool, I am having fun and am not really concerned with accumulating “points”. I do try to make the longest word I can think of just for the fun of it. I have included a couple of definitions of words I have used in case anyone would feel that the word was questionable. If that is a problem or annoying I will stop doing it.

Shouldn’t that be stratOSphere?

Ozark,

      Apparently it's the name of a windows software.

      Either way scores the same.

      Thanks for the observation.

Ah, okay — thanks. Learn something new every day.

Guess that’s why Scrabble rules don’t allow capitalized words, such as names.
