Driver license renewal

Perro Del Diablo

Recommended Posts

Been licensed to drive nearly 35 years maintain a Texas license constantly entire time. Yesterday went in to renew and had to prove my citizenship. Passport which I have never gotten, or birth certificate. Had still valid driver's license, social security card and DD 214. Not good enough. So back home dig through files until found certificate which haven't even thought about in years. Found it went back to DPS sat in waiting area for 4 hours until my number is called. Less than 10 minutes and $33 I'm good for another 6 years.

Wonder if about 40 million illegals have to do the same?

Texas is moving all the drivers licenses to be compliant with Federal REAL Act ID. Many people have been getting this hassle.  Look them in the eye and mention that to get your drivers license way back when you had to have a birth certificate when you got it the first time... They will give you the stupid DPS employee look  but you'll feel better.

When I got my first drivr's license, I was required to have my birth certificate there.

Now they want me to produce it again as if I didn't have it the first time.

I told person on other isde of counter that I was a US citizen and proved it when I got my first license and that has not changed.

The person said I needed to prove I am a citizen.

I ask if they were calling me a lier even thought I had to prove it the first time.?

I was escorted out of the building.

I think a 40 million estimate is a bit higher than actual, but the simple answer to the rhetorical question is "No."

Which is why WE have to.

And in my case it's gonna be a bitch:  Mom was widowed and re-married when I was a wee tyke.  "Gave" me step-dad's last name, which is the name appearing on every record in my life after the original birth certificate.  Didn't even know 'til I was a young adult; consulted an attorney, who advised me that I did not need to do a thing, just live my life with the same name I've always used - perfectly legal to use any name I wished, as long as I was not doing so to defraud anyone.  He was correct... for the time.

Now, when my license expires in two years, if I do not replace it with a "REAL ID" type, I will not be able to fly, purchase firearms, or ammunition.  Oh... same issue with trying to get a passport, which I've never needed.

So, to do this, I have to have a court order changing my name to my name.  Filing fee for such in most states is as low as $105; in this state it's $435.  Plus a few hundred for a lawyer if I can't do the paperwork myself.

Muddling through the forms right now.  There are multiple....   *sigh*   :(

Some think 40 million is a bit low. I personally think it’s closer to 60 million after visiting with a few folks who spent their careers in the border patrol and then ICE.

Douple check on a Birth Certificate is required.  Sticks in my mind alternative forms of proof is acceptable.

In order to meet the Indiana REAL ID requirements, you will need to provide documentation that proves your identity, Social Security Number (SSN), legal status in the U.S. and state residency. All paperwork you submit to the BMV must be original or certified copies rather than photocopies. As such, be prepared to show the following items when visiting the BMV:

One document that verifies your identity and legal presence in the U.S., such as a birth certificate, passport or permanent resident card.

One document showing your full SSN, such as a W-2 form, Social Security card, pay stub or 1099 form.

Two documents that show your residential address in Indiana, which may include a voter registration card, a bank statement or any recently-issued recurring statement, such as a utility bill.

I have.  I've checked this and even ran it by a lawyer friend... it's required.

If name on birth certificate is different, you must have marriage documents, divorce documents, or court order documents.  PLUS you have to publish a notice in the newspaper for four consecutive weeks.

"Bare" court cost is $435, newspaper cost is a flat $200.  Six hundred and thirty five bucks out of pocket just to be able to be me.

I'm reeeeally displeased.  A pox on Sacramento!  <_<

Howdy,

I heard about this. Seems the Feds wanted this years ago and have extended the final date

a couple times and are all outta extensions. For folks with a current valid passport its easy.

If you want security everybody has to be identified to the same level.

At least no dna samples....yet.

Best

Matthew - Went through a situation where I've been a Jr. forever, including social security, except on my birth certificate. In my state (WV) was $200 for court + $50 for the paper ad. Went through the paperwork for a passport + $125. Worked out fine + I have a passport.

If you really want to have some fun...try renewing a CDL with hazmat endorsement. First you have to take the hazmat test again. Then you have to go to one of the very limited places that do the fingerprints. Pay them like 85 dollars. Then wait for your background check to get done. Then after you pass that....they will notify you...you go back with all the other stuff for the Real ID. Lots of fun... And you have to do all that every time you renew your license.

Exactly. It's Real ID. It's been coming for a long time, and as CR says, states have received many extensions. On the one hand it's regrettable, on the other only citizens can get it, important in an era where some states are issuing DLs to non-citizens right and left.

You'll need it to fly, so that's that. If you have a passport, it's easy. Might as well get a passport anyway if you don't have one. Never needed one for Canada before; now you do.

As of now you don't need a REAL ID to buy guns or ammo in California. I have a Passport so I just renewed mine by mail, no REAL ID.

Arizona is the same way.  To get the new style hi-security driver's license they give you a sheet of paper divided into three sections.  You have to have a piece of evidence from each of the three sections.  Had to go home and dig them up and come back.  Needed if you want to be able to use your driver's license to get on an airplane.

You can not do so with the Federal Limits stamp.

My DL wasn't marked, and had no issue buy'n guns etc.

I do have the real ID now.

Took me two trips.  Social Security card was laminated - not acceptable - lady said will it peel off - tried it and the laminate was so old it peeled off easily without tearing the card.  Gave it back to her - she ran her fingers over it and wouldn't take it because some of the sticky stuff stayed on and made it "lumpy".  Asked how was I going to provide a SSAN without that.  Said a W2 was good, I'm self employed - I don't get W2s will a 1099 work?  Went back with a kitchen sink full of stuff - 1099 was no good because I used my office address rather than home address.  Wouldn't take my water bill because the part you tear off and send back had the address on it.

Tax return worked, wouldn't take my electric bill because my address was on the second page of the bill and not on the first.  Fortunately I had enough stuff in the pile that if something didn't work I could pull something else out.  Already had a birth certificate certified copy from a few years back when I needed it for a trip to Canada.

All said and done and she was typing the information into the system and it said my address didn't exist.  I think she was frustrated at that point, looked back through all the stuff with an address on it and verified it and pushed some magic button so it would accept it.  Best I can figure, because its also happened a few times when buying something on line is that I live in a town with a Saint in front of it, all the stuff said St. instead of the full spelling.  License came last week so I might be good to drive again - I didn't get escorted out - but I'm guessing I was close to it.

Thanks for the "heads up."

I laminated mine about fifty-five years ago, when laminating was not an issue.  After reading this, I just ordered a new one on-line, using SSA's "easy and simple" process - which could possibly be a lot "easier and simpler."

I had no problems at the Florida DMV. I was expecting a battle and never received it, even with a laminated SS card. Actually wasn't a bad experience at all. Had to give my razor knife with the pants clip to the ladies at the desk but they where nice about it. Good to go now. I can't even imagine the crap all ya'll had to go through.

We are traveling overseas to visit daughter and son-in-law.  One of the IDs the Feds would accept for passports was a "Real" DL.  I read online what the BMV required, walked in and a few minutes later BMV and I was happy.  For the wife BMV wouldn't accept the marriage certicate the Pastor had given us.  She had to go to the court house and get a government blessed marriage certificate.

In reading through the above comments it seems each state might be different in how they apply the rules.  I'm still a little proud of myself for turning around the first time and  going back to the lady and saying "OK, look through the rest of my stuff and tell me what I might be missing".  I think the second time around I also had a credit card statement which they didn't like because it was more than 90 days old, fortunately I had other stuff which satisfied them.

I think it's kinda pathetic for us - mostly citizens - to have to jump through all these hoops.  It's easier to register to vote through the DMV than to get a drivers license or identification.  But you don't need any ID to actually vote!

You need ID to vote in Nevada.

I reminded my wife that the new refs take effect in 2020 and her license doesn't expire till 2021 so if she was thinking of visiting relative back east (yucch) or mebbe Hawaii, she needed to git it done.

So she started dragging out documents. I was looking at my birth certificate and noticed that they screwed my last name up. They put in an apostrophe in De Groff in one spot and left out the space and capital G in another. Oy!

To make it worse the county clerk who recorded it was my Aunt!! :angry:

When I went to get my passport a couple of years ago. I had a photographic copy of my Birth Certificate with me. The certificate was stamped (embossed) and was accompanied by a certified (embossed) letter from the State of issue.

This particular document had been used multiple times as ID in National background checks and other background checks for security clearances over the years.

Application for passport was returned. The Birth Certificate was no longer a valid form of ID.

I had to contact the State of issue (and pay a fee) to get them to remit a specific form that the government would now accept.

As I understand it the birth certificate has to be accompanied by a government Id. Just like SS cards used to be a valid ID but not for years now because there’s no pic or print.

Of course when we were kids there weren’t any pics on any driver licenses or anything else.

I used my police ID years ago at the airport just to see if it would work. Nope. Had to use my DL. Even though to get my

LEO identification I had to pass an extensive background and psych test. Our gubmint at work.

Ms Mary, as much as I appreciate the invitation (and I DO ^_^), whenever I think of Ohio the winter of '63 - '64 comes to mind.

We'd moved.  Mom, step-dad, baby sister and baby brother.  Three poodles, two Siamese cats, one canary and one monkey.  Left Everett, Washington, and relocated to Ohio in early October.  Set up housekeeping in a little spot called Old Town, just a few miles north of Xenia.  A road that young Hardpan learned well ~ I had to walk it often enough after missing the bus after school.

Well, winter arrived in a most convincing fashion - it got COLD!  But that walk home sorta got a little easier, 'cuz I could do about a mile or more through the woods on Old Town Creek after it froze.  But then the snows came, and I was back to hiking the road.  Just as cold either route.

I shoveled a LOT of snow that winter.  And hoofed a bunch of trips to and from the local fuel station carrying two five-gallon cans of heating oil.  They were heavy... but it was COLD!

Spring finally came.  Temperatures rose.  Creek thawed.  And it rained.  And RAINED!

Then one night 'bout a quarter 'til three Ma shook me awake:  "Get up!  GET UP!  Quick!  Toss yer clothes into these pillowcases!  Pop sez  the creeks rising - we'll be flooded by sunrise!"

"Where we goin', Ma?"

"TEXAS!!  It'll NEVER rain like this in Texas!"

Yeah... Right!

Hardpan, when I moved here, Rye kept warning me about all the snow Ohio supposedly gets, and I kept telling him no big deal, I'm from Colorado, I'm used to snow....now, I don't know about up in Euclid where he lives, but here halfway between Cincinnati and Dayton, in 2 years combined we've gotten a total of 3 snow storms of more than an inch....last winter southern Arizona got as much or more snow than my area did....ok, we have gotten cold, yes, but I'm still wondering where all this snow supposedly is......

Calico, I truly do hope you don't get another winter and spring like THAT one...!  ^_^

And I gotta say, the weather in Scurry County, Texas, was noteworthy!!

The dust storms were awful - super fine, red dust in everything.  Air so dry it'd cause nosebleeds.  Traffic halted; visibility mere yards.  But the worst was the time we were having a "red-out" dust storm and it RAINED!  Oh Lordy... mudballs falling from the sky!  Entire fields of cotton literally "stomped down" and covered.  Everything coated with red mud!

Then a hot, dry summer so hot and dry that stock tanks dried up... and some got so nasty the crawdads would crawl out and try to escape, but getting baked in the sun was better than where they came from.  Winter ended one day when the temp went from mid thirties at dawn to almost 100 by mid afternoon - lost about 150 or so rabbits.  Then came the rains!!  Stock tanks flooded, snakes crawling about trying to find shelter, and worst of all - the frogs.  Zillions of frogs!  The road was slick with frogs - that is, if the roads weren't flooded.  Open the front door to come in and three or four would hop in with ya.  The snakes ate well.

"Ma...?  I thought you said it would NEVER rain like this in Texas...."  :o
