12-gauge vs 410 Recoil

I have never shot a 410.

Is there a noticeable reduction of recoil in 410 loads?
For example, Stoeger makes a SxS coach gun in 410.
This is legal only for the Buckaroo class.

I'm academically curious how much less the recoil would be in the same weight shotgun.
The physical size is the same, i.e. "large" for a youth shooter.

bfavin,

.410 has less recoil than 12 and 20 gauge.

Here is a link that has a table with numbers to reference.

OLG is correct. .410 is more expensive and sometimes hard to find when looking for a particular load.

That was done with factory loads.

WW-Featherlites and such or toned down reloads will really reduce the felt recoil in 12ga.

I made the mistake of buying Sassparilla Kid a .410 H&R single-shot Youth Model when he was a wee lad.

That thing was downright unpleasant to shoot!

A bunch of years later, ol' Palouse gave the kid a .410 Baikal SxS.  After having the springs replaced it's a totally sweet shooter.  :)

Who is this mysterious Chuck Hawks anyway?

He is a well known shooter, hunter, and writer for firearms.
I've read all his papers.
His recoil table is very close to the same numbers produced by the mass calculation formulas I use for my spread sheets.

OLG, I bought a few cases of the featherlite exactly for that reason.
Kick-EEZ makes a nice sorbothane recoil pad for the Stoeger that is also supposed to be a big help.

Wow.. that is impressive.
And 1/3 the price of the sorbothane pad.

I figure you wouldn't use 'em, or recommend 'em, if they didn't work.
Thanks!

I know of him but don't recall seeing any articles in well known gun rags.

  • 2 months later...

My best friend had an Ainsworth Fox (Ainsley Fox? This particular memory here is forty years old!) double .410 choked tight and tighter, and the man was deadly with it.

He did say never, EVER to use one in the barn, where the timbers were seasoned white oak, if you were shooting a feed-eating rat.

He caught two pellets under the rim of his spectacles where seasoned white oak returned part of the plumbum payload to sender, so to speak.

A 28 Ga. SxS on a real 28 ga. size frame Makes a Sweet shooting low recoil option fer da Youngsters ....

But you will need to reload to keep the costs down ....
