Police chief forgets her pistol....in bathroom

Around 1995, two NC highway patrolmen were headed to training with their new full-autos.  They met at a rest area on the way and were showing this hardware to each other.  Got in their cars and headed on to training, leaving a full-auto AR and an MP5 on the picnic bench.  Not sure of the outcome, but it made the local news.

I lost my glasses on a fire once. I was hosing down a smoldering chip bin on top at the mill and they fell off my nose hit the water stream from the 2.5 inch attack line I was holding and were shot out into space never to be seen again.

And then I cussed on the command channel and got chewed out by the chief.

I had four kids and money was tight, what can I say?

Years ago, we had someone leave a Reising on the roof of the bank response car and drive off.

Fortunately, the bolt was closed and it wasn't cocked and ready to go.

Messed up the magazine though.

We had a security guard leave a gun in the head on the back of the toilet.

He went back to work.

One of my guys found it.

I licked it in the check safe and called the Sheriff’s dept.

We didn’t know where it came from.

Then I saw the guard running through the shop towards the restroom.

Too late for him.

The Deputies showed up and took possession of the revolver, a really nice S&W model 10.

Turns out it belonged to the security company, not the guard.

It also turned out that the security company had not registered that one or any of their other guns in California.

They were part of a police force sale in the Midwest.

The company got all their guns confiscated and they lost their security contracts with our agency.

Bad day for that company all around.

No, but spent a night shift driving around Robinson barracks looking for another MP’s Motorola Sabre. If I remember right is was found a few days later. Yep he left it on the roof. We had those puke green Plymouth K cars the government bought a ton off.

Not necessarily. In many towns the qualification to be a chief is simply political connections. As long as the mayor likes you, you’re bullet proof.

Sheriffs are another matter. They’re usually elected.

The gun was turned in by the man who snagged it after his BIL called the Sheriff's Office.

The Chief expects discipline and has owned the error from  the start, unlike our former local Police Chief who had hers stolen from her car and didn't report it.  It was found during a car search a year later.

I worked at a large county police department and I remember several instances over the years of officers leaving their gun/gunbelt in the restroom.   Didn't happen very often but it does happen.  I think the ridicule from other officers was much worse than any official punishment handed out.  I guess where the restroom is would make a difference.

I carried one of those metal clipboards with all my completed reports inside.  I drove off with that on the roof of the car several times.

A few days ago I bought a gallon of milk in the AM, since I knew I wouldn't have time to do it after work. Left it in the work fridge all day, and being worried that I'd forget it I left myself a note on my car seat. Sure enough the note reminded me to go back and get it. Then two days later I suddenly remembered it was still in the car.

My daddy once put a real nice Beretta over-and-under on the car roof while he was loading dekes back in. He remembered it when he put on his brakes later on the highway at 50 mph and it went sliding down the windshield, across the hood, and onto the roadway.

So thirty-some years ago I was visiting an aunt and uncle in San Leandro.  Waiting for my girl cousin to say "It's time!" so we (and her hubby) could all make a mad rush to the hospital.

After a while, we heard another cousin - her brother - walking up to the door with our Uncle Joe.  They walked in; Uncle Joe literally had tears coursing down his cheeks, he was laughing so hard.  My cousin, on the other hand, was pale... wide-eyed... face shiny with cold sweat... obviously in shock.  Uncle Joe finally managed to gasp out "I've heard of it but never saw it and never thought I would!"

Well... it seems that Uncle Joe and Cuz were out running an errand, and decided to stop by Cuz's apartment that he shared with his new bride of just a few months.

But when they walked in, there was a surprise waiting for 'em.  A major surprise!

It seems that while Cuz was out, bride decided she didn't want to be married anymore.  And left.  And took everything.  Everything... furniture, rugs, pots, pans, dishes... literally, the only thing left was his clothes (in a pile) and his toothbrush.

The boy had been cleaned out!

Oh, yeah... took his car, too.

He finally came to enough to talk about it - he was totally shocked.

Then came a discussion and hypotheses... we finally decided that she had probably gone back to her ex husband, who lived across the Bay in San Mateo, where he worked as a police officer.

Uncle Joe came up with an idea - since Cuz had another key, they'd drive across the bay, cruise past the ex's house, and if the car was parked there Cuz would bail out, dive into his car, and beat feet back to San Leandro.

It worked!

About two hours later, they walked back in.  Uncle Joe was laughing uproariously... Cuz was once again pale and in shock.

It seems that after snatching his car, he was driving back East across the San Mateo bridge.  Someone pulled in front of him, and he hit the brakes.  And when he hit the brakes, the newspaper on the passenger seat slid to the floor.  And there was his bride's ex's gun belt, revolver, and badge.  His badge even!

Knowing that this was not a good thing and wanting to get it back, we took Cuz to a phone booth.  He called the SMPD and asked what would happen if he found an officer's badge and gun and turned 'em in; he was advised without hesitation that he would be arrested immediately.

Okay... well, so much for that idea!

Found a box.  Packed the gun belt, revolver, and badge securely in box.  Addressed the box to his bride's ex- but with a phony return address and mailed it.  Parcel Post!   Slowest possible delivery method; I suspect the boy might've been using some sick leave for a few days waiting for the postman...     frustrated-or-sticking-tongue-out.gif

Was always kind of funny at the jail on the 8th floor of HQ. You get off the elevator put your gun in a lock safe then escort the prisoner through the jail doors for booking. In that enclosed area between the jail doors is where you write your reports to give to the detention officer for booking. Every once in a while you would see an officer leave on the elevator and you knew he forgot to get his gun out of the lock box. A short while later that officer would return with the key in hand and white as a ghost trying to put that key back into the lock box to retrieve their gun. I always wondered what it felt like when they reached for their gun and ohhh shi---- it wasn't there. Had to be one of the most impressionable feelings.

I can't find the image now, I think I posted it here about 3 or 4 years ago.  Story was at some high tech company one of the guards left his pistol in the head.  He got it back detail stripped and vacuum shrink wrapped onto cardboard.  Even the cartridges removed from the magazine and laid out.

I
'll keep looking for that photo.

I worked for the US AEC in the 70's at their Germantown, MD Headquarters, a 1.5 million sq. foot building laid out like a 4-story VA hospital with dozens of wings, each with rest rooms. Was working late one evening when the PA announced "All Guards report to the A Wing Command Center." Oh, oh, thought perhaps the SHTF. Anyhow flagged down a guard who was scurrying around and asked what's going on? He laughed and replied that Jones left his gun belt in a crapper and could not remember which one. The whole building was painted institutional green and every wing looked the same. I guess they eventually found it. Jones is probably still being reminded about it.
