Anvil Firing

Read a couple of newspaper articles from July 1869 that mention anvil firing in passing (regarding prematurely fired anvils), such as this article from the Albany (Oregon) Democrat:

Maybe I'm in the minority - but I couldn't help but wonder...what the heck is "discharging an anvil"?

Turns out it was a thing:  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anvil_firing

And it's still done today to one extent or another:

Any of y'all ever done (or witnessed) this?

I've seen it once.  Weird to see an anvil in the air.

Discharging an anvil is the same as discharging your piece. In the case cited it seems that someone didn't time his fuse and it went BOOM right away.

We call it “shooting anvils”!!

Often impressive, it is a competitive activity!!

Thats because yer not from rural Montana...

No, it's because their gun drill sucks big green horse apples.  Idjits don't seem to have a concept of safety.  Standing in front of it while inserting the charge.  Standing in front of it while inserting the ball.  Standing in front of it, and REACHING INTO IT to light the fuse - when he knows "this Chinese fuse is inconsistant."

Not to mention no idea of where it will impact.

As an amateur blacksmith it kinda breaks my heart to see folk do stuff like that with any anvil....

It's like watching folk competing to see how far they can throw revolvers.  :(
