Garrison Joe, SASS #60708
If it is an Issue hat, it's most likely an 1858 Army hat, AKA the Hardy Hat. Somewhat like a slouch, with a little wider flat-top crown. https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=17&ved=2ahUKEwiix4Sj_KHjAhWNVs0KHc1iDZIQFjAQegQIABAC&url=https%3A%2F%2Frepository.si.edu%2Fbitstream%2Fhandle%2F10088%2F2429%2FSSHT-0030_Lo_res.pdf%3Fsequence%3D2&usg=AOvVaw2GsmWX7X72xsBMP-w53PL4 (Generally despised as hot, heavy and ugly.) Here's a photo that is almost certainly Grant in a Hardy hat. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:USGrant01.jpg Privately procurred slouch hats were very common all during the Civil War, though. Quote widespread use of nonregulation slouch hats by officers and enlisted men alike Grant seems to have had enough sense of style that he's got a slouch hat on. Officers were not issued uniforms but had to purchase them so slouch hats were common.

Garrison Joe, SASS #60708
Here's one that is a pretty good match for Civil War era slouch hat (see first slouch hat on page) https://www.ccsutlery.com/store/civil-war-kepi-caps.html Another: http://www.dirtybillyshats.com/US1.htm.html Another (slide down to Officer Slouch hat): https://www.blockaderunner.com/Catalog/catpg16.htm Now, all of those above are wool felt, which run $100 or less. That type of hat will wear a year or two. If you want one that serves for many years, you want at a goodlypercentage of beaver fur felt. A NICE slouch hat in good beaver will be about $500. As an example, see (their 20x quality): https://thelastbestwest.com/shop/cowboy-hats/old-west-hats/the-officers-slouch-custom-handmade-beaver-fur-felt-cowboy-hat/ Good luck, GJ

Tracker Jack Daniels,58780
Garrison Joe, I have two wool felt slouch hats from River Junction one black the other brown. I have been wearing them for the past 15 years and they look and feel just as good as they did when new. Maybe I am lucky, but I have no complaints about the wool felt hats they sell. You can also get the slouch hat from them in a beaver felt, last I checked they were about $200. River Junction sells good quality merchandise at reasonable prices.
