Intermittent Light primer Hits -'92 Rossi with Action Work

John Boy

Recommended Posts

Out of 100 reloads, I'll have 3 - 5 light primer hits with the '92 Rossi, 45 Colt with an action job

* Light hits with Federal - CCI and Remington Large Pistol

* 3 - 5 light primer hits shooting 100 rounds out of every box of reloads

* Rifle action is cleaned and taken to the matches clean

Probable causes?

- Main Spring not enough foot pounds ?

- Firing pin worn down ?

And what causes different head space distance because I can push the bolt forward to make the head space shorter ?

Thanks for looking

Did you buy a mainspring or cut the existing one down?

1 or 2 piece firing pin?

Do you get light hits when slow firing or only when running it at speed?

Add a washer or two to the mainspring and see what if any changes that makes.

Are you sure the primers are fully seated to the bottom of the case's primer pocket?

Try a different brand or lot of primers?

Look for internally broken FP.

Could the primers go bad from case or bullet lube contamination??

My experience with the Rossi rifles (7) tells me to look at the hammer spring.

Not necessarily being too light but not having enough throw.

Then I would lookl at the firing pin length and shape.

All else fails, I would look at the rounds for primers not setted all the way tot he bottom of the pocket.

A second stick on the primer would tell me this might be the issue should the round go off on second strike.

Last I would look for anything dragging on the side of the hammer slowing down or binding the hammer fall..

With only 3 - 5 rounds failing I would look more at the spring.

Does that rifle have a lever safety? I don't remember. You may be pulling the trigger before you have it completely in battery if it does not have a lever safety.

OK, up from the basement with various primer reloads - Slow Fired into the bullet trap

I believe the issue is with the '92 Rossi, 45 Colt, action job coil spring - 4 coils removed on Rossi 92: 24" & 20" barrel rifles

Rossi 24" primers loaded all on a Dillon 550B

* CCI LP - ignited

* Winchester 2 1/2 LP - ignited

* Federal LP - ignited

* Remington 2 1/2 LP - ignited

* S & B LP - Did not ignite - light firing pin hit

*  Winchester Staynless LP -  light firing pin hit

Rossi 20" reloaded primers

* S & B LP - Did not ignite

*  Winchester Staynless LP - Did not ignite

Uberti '66 - 100% stock

* S & B LP - Ignited

*  Winchester Staynless LP - Ignited

***Both failures to ignite - triple loaded with no primer ignitions

*** I'm not a belt buckle speed demon but in the stock '66 no failures -  only in the Rossi's

*** Both Rossi's do not have the lever lock on the tangs

Could be when I an running fast - I'm not closing the finger lever all the way up against the tang :angry:

Grit's advice accepted - easiest fix to increase the coil foot lbs pressure - Thanks

I'll do it and determine if the S&B's - Winchester Staylyn's ignite ... plus running fast, all ignite

Overall, I'm comfortable which primers are for the Rossi's to use until I increase the coil spring ft/lbs

Thanks Gents for all your suggestions causing the issue :D  SASS members are a super dupper bunch of individuals. So Case Closed ... Let's Ride on to the Canteen!

+1 on the mainspring. You can shim with washers as suggested or play with Ruger hammer springs until the problem is solved. If you have hard primers, try to get 100% ignition with them and then switch to your preferred primer.

I have the same problem with my stainless Rossi 92, 45 but only when I use primers other than federal. Mine has a Steve's gunz spring kit in it. One of these days I'm going to put a few washers under the spring...

You can't have a light action and fire all types primers at the same time.....it's give and take. Many smiths set the rifles up only to fire Federal (or maybe Fed & Win) and that's why Federals are the first to go when supplies start to dry up compared to others.

Too me the rifle sounds perfect! Just go get some Federal 150's and call it a day. If you add more mainspring it won't feel as smooth so it's give and take. You will have to decide if a stiffer action is worth the ability to shoot any primer or if you would rather be more picky about reloading. Primers vary in hardness (or at least what it takes to ignite them) so you have to decide.

Also make sure the hammer or firing pin isn't dragging....but if it's been to a smith it shouldn't.....but we all make mistakes.

The AN washer shim, will fix the FTF issues.

Why-:huh:

Never had any issue with them in any cartridge I load.

Their match primers are some of the best out there.

Then your springs are to 'lite'.

I run lighter than factory springs in all of my SASS/CAS guns, and they will pop every primer made.

The CCI issue was 10 to 15 years ago when the cups where harder because they were designed to be used in military semi autos.

CCI was taken over and the cups are now the same cups used in Federal Premium primers.  (more than ten years ago)

If you are having failure to fire of CCI, your hammer springs need to be stronger or have a longer throw.

Is there any advantage to a 1pc titanium pin vs steel?
I don't see the published weights of either.
