Tennessee Snuffy
I been working on various loads for my Shilo sharps 45 70 with 1 in 18 twist. I have been loading various IMR 4198 loads and various Bullet weights from several suppliers and I am not happy with my results. What powder and amount do other cowboys use behind 405 g lead bullets (rnfp)? thanks Tennessee Snuffy
Sedalia Dave
Have you slugged the bore so that you know what diameter bullets to use? You will get the best results with properly sized cast lead bullets.
Hoss
My Shiloh Sharps seems to like Montana Bullet 535 grn. 25 Grns of 5744. My chrono malfunctioned so I don’t know exact speed but suspect around 1150 FPS. Still a work in progress, but enjoying the task. This is is my 200 yd target from last Friday. Major Crimes
I used to shoot 405gr (RNFP) from my Pedersoli 34" 1:18 barrel but have now gone up to 535gr for longer reach (I shoot these out to 600M). I was using 34gr of ADI 2207 (its the same as H4198 and is "similar" to IMR 4198) with the 405gr proj. When I get home on Wed (its Tue here) I will check my data and I can give you some FPS velocities (from memory it was around 1350/1400 fps). I now use 22gr of 2205 ("similar" to Accurate 5744) to push the 535gr at around 1140fps.
