USS Constitution Turnaround Cruise - SCROLL FOR PHOTOS

Recommended Posts

3 or 4 months ago I posted here in the Saloon about a cruise that was to occur on July 4th aboard the USS Constitution. The Navy and the museum were going to take her out and turn her around. They are going to take Old Ironsides our this coming Saturday and they are doing the same on July 4th. There were 120 slots on each day to be drawn. Successful candidates can bring one guest.

I got an email yesterday that I won a spot on the July 4th cruise! I sent an RSVP this morning confirming I will attend. I am taking my son-in-law along as my guest.

I am so excited about this I can hardly wait. :D

To think that when I was a kid I used to walk by the Navy recruiter’s office uptown and stop and look at the old recruiting poster with the sailor and the boy looking at the Constitution and dream one day I would get to see her. I did get to see her last year and that was a dream come true. I never thought I would ever get to board her and go on a cruise, be it a short harbor cruise under tug power, but so what! I get to go on a cruise aboard Old Ironsides.

I am really looking forward to this. :FlagAm:

I imagine you will also tour USS Cassin Young DD-793 berthed next to her.

if you’re up for more vessels the brig Beaver and ship Eleanor are at the Tea Party Museum.

Farther south, in Battleship Cove, Fall River, is BB-59, USS Massachusetts, USS Lionfish S-298, USS Joseph P. Kennedy Jr, the German cruiser Hddensee, PT-796 and PT-617, and the bow of USS Fall River CA-131.

in Quincy, the USS Salem, CA-139, Des Moines class heavy cruiser, the world’s last heavy cruiser to enter service and the only one still in existence.

Mayflower II is currently at the Henry B. duPont Preservation Shipyard in Mystic, CT for restoration scheduled to return to Plymouth in 2020 for a 400th anniversary celebration.

If you don’t know anything about Boston,I recommend a duck boat tour from either the science museum or the Prudential Center, not the aquarium. All the duckboat tours are different, depending on the driver but very entertaining, the tour will do the streets of Boston and the Charles River.  (The tours from the aquarium do not use duck boats and do not enter the river.)

I've had a number of great vantage points for the turn-around from several offices over the years, but have never been fortunate enough to make the cruise itself; well done, Pat!

Thank you Loophole. I didn’t realize this occurs more often than I thought. Regardless I am jazzed to have won a spot on this “winding”. :D

PS: it is a WW II duck boat.

recommend dinner at Legal Seafood.

Ooh...I may have to just do that. I missed out on having dinner at Legal Seafood the last (only) time I visited Boston. Thanks for the reminder. :)

Fantastic!  I'm envious.

Pictures. Take LOTS of pictures!

Oh, I will. I will post a bunch on here.

I just saw my son-in-law and we were planning our trip. We are both really looking forward to this trip.

In addition to my phone I was going to take my little digital camera but then I remembered my “real” 35mm camera. It’s my old Pentax 90. I might just take that one too with some really good film.

Pat,

i have been on it . You will have a blast sir. Notice the head room when you go below. Men were shorter back then.

I actually visited the ship last year. I got a big kick out of the gun deck and the mess area. I was overwhelmed by the whole thing. I feel so lucky to be able to go visit for this cruise. :D

Outstanding!

So Pat... I see no sails.  Is she towed out?  Does she have some sort of auxiliary propulsion?

HP:

Usually, she is towed out into the harbor by tugs for the turnaround.  The last time I recall that she moved under sail was in 1997, at which time she was 200 years old. They were flying 6 sails out of a possible 36, minimizing stress on the rig.

Even towed, she is beyond impressive.
