I disbelieve those calculators.

In 1961 my father was going to college on the GI Bill, and working part time at the hospital in the office for a dollar an hour.

My mother, a Registered Nurse, was making two dollars an hour.

I kinda doubt RNs only make $17.50 an hour these days

I would think the inflation calculators would be based on the purchasing power of a dollar, rather than on what a person's income was. Like a gallon of gas @ 25¢, times 9.5 to come up with $2.37 today, or bread @ 20¢ times 9.5 equals $1.90, and so on.

Smokes were 20¢, now $6 (here). Many things fit into the “averages”
