During the Seminole wars in Florida in the 1830s it was noted in a few journals that the Indians fought very unencumbered. Virtually nekkid with a rifle, powderhorn, and a mouth full of musket balls. Dump powder down the bore, spit a ball in after it,  ram it home, charge the pan, and light one off.
