Sixgun Sheridan
Unfortunately the guys on Okinawa didn't have much time to celebrate. Just a few days ago I came across a pr*** who was spewing the revisionist garbage that the only reason why we finally dropped the A-bomb on Japan was to intimidate the Russians. I asked him if he got his info from that Oliver Stone documentary. Yep! .
Trailrider #896
Just because the Japanese were arming the entire population with everything from whatever small arms and suicide satchel charges to sharpened bamboo sticks, and the military was ready with kamikaze planes, chemical weapons (mustard gas, etc.), and, given enough time, they were working on their own nuke their effort was being conducted in Korea near the Chosin Reservoir... when the first bomb was dropped, the head of their program knew exactly what it was!!!), and the estimated casualties of the Allied invasion troops would have been around a million KIA, WIA, etc., why should we have used a weapon that would shorten the war...maybe. (Don't forget, even after Nagasaki, most of the Imperial General Staff favored continuing the war!) In the movie "MacArthur", supposedly when El Supremo was informed of the existence of the A-bomb, he was incensed. An aid (in the movie) said, "Supposing it doesn't work?" To which Mac is alleged to reply, "What if it does?!"
