Cold Lake Kid, SASS # 51474
Does anyone know where I can find published recipes for a 500 grain bullet and smokeless powder? I'm shooting a Pedersoli Sharps as well as a Rolling Block, a Hi-wall and a Trapdoor. Yes, I do like 45-70's Why do you ask?
Kettleman, SASS #27254
Lyman publishes a cast bullet loading manual with this type of data I have an old 4th edition that I use. I shoot a rolling block and use 500 gr tips as well. The book lists several types of powders and charges for several bullet weights and styles
Sedalia Dave
https://www.hodgdon.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/12/trail-boss-reduced-loads-2018.pdf Quote 1) Find where the base of the bullet to be loaded is located in the case and make a mark on the outside of the case at this location. Then fill the case to that mark with Trail Boss, pour into the scale pan and weigh. This is your maximum load. Pressures will be below the maximum allowed for this cartridge and perfectly safe to use! 2) Take 70% of this powder charge weight (multiply the maximum load from step 1 by .7), and that is your starting load. 3) Start with this beginning load and work up to your maximum charge, all the while searching for the most accurate reduced load. Once found, the fun begins!

Tex Jones, SASS 2263
While the Hodgdon web site doesn't list a 500 grain load, it does have a load for a 485 lead bullet. The range for IMR 4895 and IMR 4198 loads is significantly lower than John Boy's list. Those are Trapdoor type loads, which include Sharps and Rolling Block actions. John Boy
Quote Which of these loads are suitable for his Trapdoor ?? Shooters Information Center This Page is for the Benefit of Veteran and Novice Shooters of Trapdoor Rifles and Carbines. !!! BOOK MARK IT FOR FUTURE REFERENCE !!! http://www.trapdoorcollector.com/shooterstext.html The smokeless & black powder 45-70 and other caliber powder charges plus bullet alloys are listed at the bottom of this Trapdoor website Another source for trapdoor powder charges ... https://www.thehighroad.org/index.php?threads/45-70-trapdoor-smokeless-loads.620790/ And here;s a duplex powder load .... A5744 can be loaded without fillers to approximate black powder ballistics, internal and external. The 5744 load is 40%, grain weight, of the original black powder load. For my older 45-70s, I match the 45-70-405 full load by using 0.4 x 70 grains = 28 grains of 5744. One heck of an accurate load and it chronys at 1275 or so. Cold Lake Kid, SASS # 51474
Thanks Pards I'll start in the lower ranges of my in stock powders and see what kind of accuracy I can get as I work up. My TB loads with a 350 gr bullet aren't bad up to the 200 yard limit at my range, but the new ranges under construction are going extend things quite a bit more.
