The FBI research folks say this is the most lethal of them all. 648 grains at 1250 fps is around 46+ lbs of recoil in my 7lb 870. Good grief.. and I though 45-70 delivered a pounding. No. 1 buck is good but I favor #4 buck for better coverage against soft targets, When I was at NWS Seal beach we were issued #4 buck and it was a terror at the ranges we were expected to need it. BTW, we were issued Remington 870 shotguns with 28 inch barrels, too. Had a couple of 18 ", but only 7 or 8 compared to 35 or 40 28" guns. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

It would be interesting to pattern #1 and #4 at home defense distances. #1 has less coverage but deeper penetration and wound channels. I did buy a nice 28" trap barrel for the 870, but that is secondary. After a day of trap shooting with the 870, I'm thinking a Remington V3 is in order. Pulp, SASS#28319 Posted May 7, 2019 Share Posted May 7, 2019 A lot of the "experts" do not recommend bird shot for home self defense, saying the shot may not penetrate to vital organs. However, I have a hard time imagining anyone continuing a threat after receiving a load of those #4 bird shot. Or even the #8 shot. As for the Winchester PDX, if they hit as hard as they kick, then someone is going down. They are painful to shoot, at least through a short barreled SXS.
