Mincemeat

Recommended Posts

My father, also a lawyer, met Sir Ewen Montagu at an international convention of the American Bar Association in London.  Subsequently, Sir Ewen was the guest of my parents in their home in the United States.  I was serving in the Armed Forces, and could not be present.  However, they called me long distance, and I was honored to speak with Sir Ewen, and he sent me an autographed copy of his book about Operation Mincemeat, "The Man Who Never Was".  Whether Ian Flemming or Sir Ewen Mantagu originated the idea, the successful execution of the operation saved thousands of lives, and led to the Allied victory in WWII.  Sir Ewen died in August 1974.  My parents have also passed on.  Whatever the true identity of "Major William Martin", he served his country in a way he never could have envisioned.  RIP, all!
