Garrison Joe, SASS #60708
I'd think about 18 grains of 5744 would be a real nice load in your 32-40. But that is not one I have shot.... Fellow on Cast Boolits forum recommends 20 grains with the 170 grain cast bullet. http://castboolits.gunloads.com/showthread.php?308398-32-40-with-170-Grain-Boolet-for-deer Good luck, GJ

Major Crimes
In case you want to experiment more later. These loads are from the ADI manual - 2207 is the same powder as H4198, Trail Boss is the same as your Trail Boss and 2205 is "similar" to A-5744 (I use the same load data as Accuracy 5744 in my sharps with no issues and similar results in velocities). 32-40 Winchester Case: Winchester Barrel length: 24" Twist: 1:16" Trim length: 2.120" Primer: REMINGTON 2 1/2 Bullet Powder Bullet Diam. Kettleman, SASS #27254
according to my Lyman 4th edition for 32-40 170 gr bullet the starting load for 5744 is 15 gr at 1326 FPS and max load is 18.5 gr at 1631 fps. Hope this helps. I used 5744 in my 45-70 and it works great.
Garrison Joe, SASS #60708
And, since I find my best hard-alloy bullet velocity is usually right at 1600 FPS, I recommended 18.0 grains for the OP to try. If he had plenty of range time to try out the whole range of velocities which the Lyman book covers, I would have recommended he start low end and work up. It all depends upon what the shooter feels comfortable doing, in the long run. And, I would recommend ANYONE who is putting together rifle cartridge cast bullet loads put the Lyman Cast Bullet Handbook on their shelf and read it, just to check for themselves that a load is safe. Jeff Beaumont
Silver Sam, I am not a SASS member, but want to talk to you about an early Uberti 1866 Yellow Boy in 38 SPL, S/N 3099. You state you found someone to put a short stroke kit in yours, and you love it! Mine will not eject empty shells about half the time, but otherwise functions well and is very accurate. I would like to send it to whoever did yours and get it tuned up. PLEASE email me back at the Gmail address above, Thanx very much in advance. Jeff Beaumont, Gardnerville NV.
