I'm reading a really good book, Dead Man's Gold by J.A. Johnstone. In it he (Kid Morgan) makes a smokeless fire so not as to attract Apaches in the area but heat up some coffee.

How does one make a "smokeless fire"?

And if possible build it under a tree, so that if any smoke is produced it will be dissipated by going through the leaves and branches.

That's like when you're smoking on guard duty you always cup the cigarette in your hand, so the glowing coal is not seen by the enemy.

It doesn't matter that you see the glowing coal, so your night vision is destroyed, or that the enemy can smell the tobacco smoke. As long as he doesn't see the glowing cigarette end, you're golden. ;)

Even with good wood, a small fire, and under trees, if you're in indian country you're taking a big risk. Eat yer cold jerky and drink water so you may survive to have coffee again later.

J29 appears to be a sailboat, or possibly a highway in California.

It’s red. Red light won’t ruin night vision. The smell might get you kilt though. :D

I was reading about hunting leopard one time. Capstick? Maybe.

Anyway. He said smoking on stand was fine. There was always a brush fire going somewhere in the African bush, so the smell of something burning would not upset the leopard at all.

The sound of a match or a lighter, on the other hand, would scare him off.

So if you were going to smoke on stand, you needed to chainsmoke. Light the second one off the stub of the first one.

J-79 was the military designation for the F-4 Phantom II's power plants.  They left a smoke trail that could be seen long before the aircraft was visible to the naked eye. It was often claimed that the F-4 could do anything the military asked of it except sneak up on the enemy.
