Lowes vs Home Depot

Recommended Posts

Locally, we have a Home Depot where I regularly go for my hardware and gardening needs but yesterday we were in Prescott so we hit the Lowes store. What a difference in service! Unlike the staff at Home Depot who do everything they can to avoid making contact and helping, the Lowes staff actually tried to locate customers who looked in need. Wish it wasn't so far away cause they would get all my business.

Also if you sign up for MY LOWES account ,like a reward account, you can get veteran discount online. Home depot doesn't do that

We have had a Home Depot in the city 20 miles away for about 10 years now and just last year a Lowes opened up 1/4 mile from the Home Depot.

In Fort Wayne it is the exact opposite. I'm in both for work quite a bit so I see it almost daily. Lowes employees suddenly find the tops of their shoes very interesting when you walk up. The only employee that will talk to you is the one taking your money. Home Depot every employee you see asks to help. Piss poor management and  training in my opinion.

I had the opposite experience with the Lowe’s in Escondido. Home Depot always seems to have people available to answer questions and help find things. Lowe’s was like a ghost town as far as finding knowledgeable people to answer questions.

Its all about the management.  Here Lowes makes you sign up to get a veterans discount. The Home depot will give it to at the register if you show any military ID.

Question for those that have it, is Lowes still requiring you to submitt a copy of your DD-214? I wouldn't get one because the local store wanted a copy of my DD-214.

We have both here,  and I patronize them about equally depending on sale prices.  We also have a couple of Menard’s stores; imagine a Lowe’s or Home Depot about 4 times as big, plus groceries!  Fun place to get lost in!!:D

It's like that everywhere.  I worked at the Lowes in Durant, OK for awhile after I retired from the papermill.  Some folks are really good in their areas, others are pretty close to useless.  My job was stocking from 5AM to 9AM.  I would always go out of my way to help customers after the store opened.  It seemed like most of the better employees worked the morning shifts.  After 5PM or so, a customer was pretty much on their own.

Yup - have more enjoyment at LOWES than Home Depot....overall. Sometimes one will have what the other doesn't and when that happens, CS isn't all that important to me. :P

We have both here in PMD, about 1 mile apart. Great service from both.

What I like is the Tractor Supply Company that just opened up about 1 yr ago.

Great bolt section........Great selection of pet food too.

Of course, TSC has to be on the other side of town. :lol:

When I had to load up a tub and toilet at Lowe's alone because of crappy employees I was done. They would pick up the pace to get past me.

Menards is a good store. I usually go there for all my home supplies and lumber.

One Lowes is 17 miles away. The second one is 26 miles away. The closest Home Depot is 80+ miles away. The both Lowes have good employees. Most times, if you ask about a product, the employee will take you directly to it. Signing up for my military discount was easy. All they have to do in put in my phone number at check-out.

The nearest Home Depot ifs 75 miles. Lowes is farther. I seldom go to either one. But it has been my experience in the past that stores that have good local management have the best trained employees and customer service, regardless of corporate policies.

The nearby Lowes has helpful people, but too few of them. There's usually a pretty long wait for someone to be freed up from helping the 5 or 6 people who begged for help before you did.

As for Home Depot, the last store I went to 15 years ago screwed me over big time when my wife and I moved into a new home. We special-ordered $3,000 in new appliances, and while waiting for the order to come in their delivery area changed, and they refused to deliver them when they finally got them in. Getting a refund on the special-ordered appliances was also a bear. It took multiple angry phone calls and several talks with alleged managers (one of whom turned out to be a fake one) to finally get my money back so I could order them from Lowes instead. We ended up going three weeks in a new home without ANY appliances. I have never set foot in a Home Depot since then.

Lowes is 85 mile round trip and Menard's is across the street from them. Home Depot is somewhere around 120 mile round trip. Our local lumber yard charges twice as much as those places. The Lowes in Sedalia has great employees along with Menard's and Home Depot. Mostly shop Lowes because of the Military Discount I get, plus it is set up for any internet orders I make for the discount.

The HD at Frontier Village is a total waste of time and the one next to Hobby Lobby, while better isn't enough so to pull me away from the Lowes four miles further west.  I'm not sure where there's a HD closer to Cornville, but it might be worth the extra driving to come over here to Lowes.

Hell, if you get here at the right time (email or message me a day or two in advance and your odds will be better to catch the right time) you might even con me into buying breakfast or lunch.

We have a HD here in Cornville but it is pretty poor whenit comes to service. I will try to take you up on that lunch offer the next time I head your way.

Of course it goes without saying that gone are the days of the small-town hardware and lumber stores that nonetheless had EVERYTHING. I used to work at a Coast to Coast, and we sold everything... lumber, nails, buckets, concrete, even guns and ammo. A one-stop shop for any mobsters in the area. ;)

While there is one Ace Hardware close by, they carry very little and are hideously overpriced so more often than not I'm forced to go to Lowes anyway.

I have a couple of Home Depots near me and we have a Lowes a  few miles away. They are all hit and miss with service and support. It just depends which department you are in.

Lowe’s and Home Depot both give 10% veterans discounts.

At Lowes you just plug in your phone number. At HD I just show ID.

The Home Depot discount is for active duty, retired, reservists and disabled vets. It is not for all veterans except on Veterans Day, Memorial Day, and Independence Day. Not sure about Vietnam Veterans Day but probably not seeing as how most people don't know it exists.

Only when I show ID at register Lowes I can get it with online orders as well. I shop both depending on what I'm looking for and price they have

Home Depot gives to me as long as I prove I served. In Texas I can have veteran put on license and that is good enough.

When I bought a washer and dryer at HD a couple years ago, they asked me if I was s veteran, it was not Memorial day  or any of the others you mentioned. It was just a regular day! Since I am not a veteran I didn’t get it! The 2 HD’s that I go to both give discounts everyday!

In my neck of the woods, there are several of each, Home Depot and Lowes.  It varies from store to store and in different parts of the area as to what kind of service you get from which!!

It also depends on what you're looking for in certain stores!!  I found one Home Depot where I got NEARLY all of the electrical supplies for my shop when it was built. I wired the entire building with the help of another cowboy who was a great electrician's helper on this job. It all functions perfectly and passed the electrical inspection the first try!!  The folks in the electrical and tool and equipment departments were top shelf!!

I was stating the Home Depot corporate policy, not what local managers might do. The official line is for Retired, Disabled, Active and Reserve members and families at any time. Other vets only on those special days.

Home Depot gives a discount to our VFW post for purchases.

We have all three in this area. as we have a commercial account at HD ,i've had a bunch of experience with them. the people at the commercial desk are top notch. For myself, i tend to go to Menard's for most of my stuff:blush:

But they want to see proof (I used my VA card).  They won't honor a hat covered in proof ("because anyone can buy a hat") and I won't show them my DD214.

I'm also a bit tired of going in at 9:00am and finding all the aisles blocked off while they restock all the materials that were sold  before 4:00pm day before.  Mis-management.

You may be right, this according to Military wallet:

https://themilitarywallet.com/home-depot-lowes-10-military-discount/

The Home depots I go to (2) are great! They both give discounts to veterans everyday, sometimes you just ask them about it and they give it to you. (According to a couple veteran friends I have) The sales staff is friendly and somewhat knowledgable although that's a crap shoot!

There are no less than 4-HD's and 4-Lowes in Pinellas Co. They are each within a block of each other at the 4 different locations. I don't think any of them have great customer service. It really is decided on the individual working in the department....some are helpful and others act like you're bothering them. It all really changed when they started stocking their stores with 1/3rd appliances instead of what folks were really going in them for. Seems like they'll hire anyone who says they used to be a (pick your department) specialist and can pass a piss test.

I know this.....if the package has been opened....don't buy it, it's missing parts, defective or otherwise unusable. They seem to take returns and put them back on the shelf.

The "displays" that they put in the middle of the aisles really annoys the hell out of me. Anyone with a dolly (especially the ones with wood) or a cart have a hard time not running into you.

The days of the old mom and pop stores are gone and it's sad. I used to enjoy going and talking to an "old timer".....now I am one. Maybe I should get a job at HD or Lowes.
