What Happened to Government Cheese

Recommended Posts

Used to eat that at my grandma's house. It's all she kept. She gave the rest of anything else to "folks that really need it". Wish I could buy it

when Food Stamps and the WIC (Women, Infants and Children) programs came along the government cheese program was discontinued.

I researched this last time someone brought it up--wanted some of that cheese, too.

I remember my Mom bringing home government cheese and butter in the early 70’s. I remember it tasted pretty darn good.

Certainly not the same as Velveeta cheese.  The government stuff wouldn't melt!

I don't remember where I got some of it, But I remember it was really good. I think my Grandparents got some of it, they farmed and was over 65 at the time they were giving it away.
