New Mexico Action Needed! - House Committee to Consider New York Style Gun Control Legislation on Tuesday!

On Tuesday, February 26 at 1:30pm in Room 317, the House Consumer and Public Affairs Committee is scheduled to consider legislation, Senate Bill 8, that would criminalize most private firearm transfers in New Mexico. Please contact committee members and strongly urge them to OPPOSE Senate Bill 8.

Senate Bill 8, so-called "universal” background check legislation sponsored by Senators Richard Martinez (D) and Peter Wirth (D), would ban almost all private firearms sales between law-abiding individuals. Gun owners would be forced to pay fees and obtain government approval before selling firearms to friends, neighbors and co-workers, or fellow hunters, competitive shooters and gun club members. This proposal would have no impact on crime and is unenforceable without gun registration.  As amended, Senate Bill 8 now requires that all federal firearm licensees perform these background checks. 29 out of 33 New Mexico Sheriffs oppose this legislation.

In other New Mexico news, the Torrance County Commission (where Founders Ranch is located) voted unanimously to make the county a "2nd Amendment Sanctuary County" this AM after some public comment (all pro 2A).  This would prohibit any county resources from being used in regards to laws deemed unconstitutional (both State and Federal) such as all those under consideration in Santa Fe.  Sheriff Rivera affirmed that his department would not enforce unconstitutional laws.

 

Torrance County has joined 14 other NM counties who have passed similar resolutions.  29 Sheriffs have come out in favor of these resolutions in their counties.  Holdouts are Santa Fe Co., Dona Ana Co. (Las Cruces), and Bernallilo Co. (Albuquerque).  Los Alamos Co. no comment yet.  A classic rural versus urban devide.
