Winchester 97 - Action Work Needed

Recommended Posts

Hi all:

I have a new to me Winchester 97 solid frame.  It’s an original 1900 model. Looking for advice on a full “service” and inspection.  Also tuning for CAS.

Any experiences with folks that work on these?

Of the 97's I've owned, a good cleaning is the first step to getting them to run, since that last ones were made in 1957, They'll have 60 + years of build up in them since not many people want to attempt a full strip down to clean. As suggested, have Lasiter look it over and recommend what needs to be done to make sure it's safe and then modify it to meet your needs.

I just got my 1887 back from the smith at Ahlman's (507) 685-4244 that took over for Coyote Cap.  I think his name is either John or Jake, anyways he took a real turd of a Chinese 87 and turned it into a slick drop two SASS gun.

Goatneck Clem 817-247-9982 here in TX also does nice work on shotguns.

Johnny Meadows 928-300-6684 does really nice shotgun work too, but I'm not sure if he works on 97s.

Those are the three SASS smiths I have had personal experience with when it comes to shotguns and I would recommend any one of them.
