They Shall Not Grow Old

Recommended Posts

Just returned from seeing this film https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/They_Shall_Not_Grow_Old  also:  https://www.imdb.com/title/tt7905466/

An extraordinary documentary about life in in the trenches of WWI from the British infantryman's point of view. The film is entirely 1914-18 archival footage from the Imperial War Museum. Audio is entirely recordings of WWI vets recorded in the 1960s & '70s. Director Peter Jackson (Lord of the Rings) is a passionate student of WWI who has been able to restore never seen before film, merged dialogue with the footage and brought to life the Western Front. It was also presented in 3D at the theater I attended - amazing.

It's not about the history of the causes of the Great War, only life on the Front. There's no point of view other than that of those who survived it..

I was fortunate to see it as the release was extremely limited to just a couple of days in November and December. Today was the only day for its re-release. Depending on demand, there may be more dates ahead - theaters only. If you have an opportunity, it's a must see. Excellently produced and very powerful.

As a high school history teacher, I had to see it.  It was very well done.  My only complaints were $16.50 a ticket and, because of the limited showings, the theater was totally full.

If you have the opportunity to go please don’t miss it and be sure that you stick around for the fascinating extra 30 minute interview with Jackson who explains many interesting insights about how the film was made.

So is it only going to be shown in theaters? I've never seen it available in my neck of the woods.

I know little about the distribution except that it's done by Fathom Events which specializes in event cinema and is jointly owned by AMC, Cinemark and Regal. It's setting box records so I imagine there will be more showings in the future.

Check out their site in the above link for more, some of which are classics we've only seen on TV.

They're showing John Wayne's "True Grit" May 5th & 8th.
