People forget that the purpose of the Second Amendment was to protect the people from the Government.  It assures, and the SCOTUS confirmed, that the people can keep and bear arms in common use by the military.   The AR 15 is certainly in common use by the US military (Government).

The AR-15 is only a look alike of the assault rifle used by US military.  Post the Korean war all militaries adopted assault rifles, "select fire rifle that is chambered in an intermediate cartridge".  The AR-15 isn't an assault rifle because it isn't select fire.  The AR-15 lower housing is missing a hole for the auto sear pin that the M16. M4, etc. lower housings have.
