Took a spur making class, it was a blast!!

Recommended Posts

I’ve been on another life adventure, go
Figure right. I decided I wanted to learn how to make true hand made custom spurs. So I went to south Texas and took lessons from one of the greats in the spur making world. We put in some very long 8-9 hour days. First day started off with only two blank pieces of flat metal, I had to design and draw my own style shank and rowel. Once that was done I hand cut and made every piece of this spur. I can tell you Nothing was pre fab in this project, lol. Once everything was finished and looking like an actual spur we started the silver mounting part and final finishes. Yep you guessed it , I had to cut every piece of silver by hand using a jewelers saw. Well super long story kinda short , it was a absolute pleasure getting to learn an true western art from one of the best. My end result was a nice pair of true hand made custom single mount spurs. Below are a “few” pics of the process. I’m excited to start a new part of the western experience I enjoy so much, “Double J Custom Spurs”.

I assume you have done metal working and welding before and that this is not your first rodeo with these skill sets! ;)

I’m actually more of a dobber than a welder and this was my first time working with metal. But with that being said I’m a quick study and very meticulous. :)

Indeed you are!

So are you just dabbling or are you gonna offer custom Spurs?

I should have my black smith shop set up completely in about a week. I’ll be building custom hand made spurs, ranger style belt buckles and buckles for spur straps.

Howdy,

I sure like what I see.

One little suggestion....serial numbers.

Just stamp a 1.

And maybe some sort of date if you are so inclined.

I have watched a fella make knives and develop his skills for

maybe 20 years or so.  He regrets not numbering his work.

Best

That’s a great suggestion Chili. I have actually ordered a custom makers mark and number punches. I’ll also keep a record of the customers name and address with the spur number they purchased.

Dang, when you go in, you go all in!

Put me line for a pair.

I will say I'm a bit surprised you chose spurmaking over hatmaking ;)

Haven't you heard?  Tanning chemicals lead to mental disorders...

And yes, when you get to your 93rd pair... I want 'em!
