I'll explain it. 20 pistol, 20 rifle, 16 shotgun.

Position 1 - Progressive sweep with revolvers on 4 targets.

Position 2 - Release the bowling ball (on a railroad track) at any time. With the remaining 9 rounds, triple tap the three targets.

Meanwhile, the bowling ball is rolling down this 100 foot track to a specialty target launcher (the bottom 1 inch of a shotgun hull with primer, light BP load with over powder wad. Sitting above this is a soda can, well shook.) Once the bowling ball hit the plunger, the shot went off and the can went flying, straight up, about 100 yards.

Position 3 - with shotgun, knock down the 15 knockdown targets while waiting to take your shot at the high flying soda can.

Position 2/4 with 10 rifle rounds, progressive sweep on 4 targets.

Position 1/5 Progressive sweep with revolvers on 4 targets.

You could stage ammo and spare cylinders or revolvers anywhere.

The stage was about 50 yards wide. You went over and back.

Oxygen and wheel chairs were available at the end.

Yes, rifle was single shot. Yes, Revolvers were Cap and Ball. Yes, everything was Black Powder. Yes it was Plainsman. Yes, we had 50 shooters. Yes, we had a great time.

That is a whole match in just one stage. :D

Where do I sign up? :)

I would love to do those as you can bet in going to set up some of them.   I wasn't around in the olden days they everybody talks about. When I first heard of sass people were talking about those stages and that is why I first came to try. Unfortunately  i haven't seen much of it.  There is a club in Wisconsin that still does the lasso and hatchet/knife toss.  I really enjoyed it. I've got extra saddles and scabbords Reins. So that would be easy.

As long as straight arrow isn't the one on the handle the buck board would be cool.

You missed some of the best stages that Cantankerous Jeb used to write at the Crow River Rangers.

However, I know what you mean as I am often First (and only) Lady Plainsman. That is despite my cylinders giving me fits to change (let alone load, which I can't do).

I sure miss shooting plainsman... but since my hand surgery I can't shoot Duelist style. No doubt, I don't know of any other Plainsman event that would top any of our Mother of All Plainsman events. Some of them used 3 bays, uninterrupted. You would shoot one bay and run around to the next bay and shoot it and then over to the next bay and shoot it... all for one time! Yeah... those were really fun. People would be begging to borrow equipment so that they could shoot it.

Did the shooter in this pic start already seated, or did he have to get in after the beep? Even if done off the clock, getting in and out of the tub can be challenging for some shooters. It also adds about a minute or more (to enter and then climb out) per shooter. When the weather is good, we have 40-60 or so shooters at a monthly. I don't mind carrying a bag of gold dust or throwing a lasso at something, but this kind of stuff would make for a long day at our club. I want to shoot, not compete in a steeplechase.

YMMV

Shooter shot from seated positions and stayed that way. No shotgun targets on the stage for safety reasons. Like I said in my post all shooters are considered when we do this stuff. No acrobats involved just sit and shoot. The tub even has a chair in it  do you don’t have to go all ether way down

We use to do a Bug Splat stage from the tub. The tub had a 4 x 8 plywood façade in front of it with a open door in it. In the middle of the door was a sheet of cardboard with 5 catsup packets taped on it like a card (shooter did his own taping while in line) Cardboard was stapled on a piece of wood lath and fit into a pipe. the shooter would shoot at the Coackroaches (catsup packets). they had to bleed to count. Spotter watched for the bleed. When done with the pistol, shooter would use shotgun to blow away the wood lath. When the cardboard fell it revealed the rifle targets down range.

It was a fun stage... took a while but was worth it... besides, back then we were not in a big hurry. We have not done it in a while because a bunch of our members went and got OLD on us. We might revise it and use a table and chair so that all them (us) Oldsters won't have to climb in and out of the Tub. Where there is a will, there is a way!

Dug up some old match info books from Plainfield Raid and Richmond Roundup in Cal. back in the early 2000s. Stages where you didn't even use all four guns! Heresy! Eight shotgun targets! Split pistols! (sorry Gunfighters). Some really great ideas in there, some not so great. Was so much fun though. The team shoot at RR was a hoot! Whole posse shoots revolvers to cut a 2x4 in half, then moves to rifles to cut a 4x4 in half, then shotguns to cut a sheet of plywood in half - Lengthwise! Great time and Buffy was quite the character.

I'm a newbie, just under 4 years under my gun belt.  I have shot very few of the style of stages mentioned here.  But I do know from experience that there are 3 types of stages I really dislike shooting:

  1. Shooting while sitting down
  2. Shooting while sitting down
  3. shooting while sitting down

Other than that, I wouldn't mind shooting some of the old style stages once a year or so.  But, if there were 2 matches the same weekend and one was as described in this thread vs. one that had close/fast stages, it would be an easy decision.  Close and fast every time for me.  It's just what I enjoy.

The only stages we have seated shooting anymore is where the shooter starts seated at a table, revolvers on the table. ATB, shooter can stand or stay seated to shoot CLOSE targets. Don't even use it that much though. Bad knees (mine, specifically) keep me from writing this into stages.

Stop it. Just Stop it.

No more talk about the "good old stages" unless you show the stage so we can at least get an idea what was so gosh darn fun!!

Buckboard with vehicle springs under the four corners.  You start seated in the buckboard seat.  BEEP!  Pull the reins until the SG KDs are set.  With rifle hit the R targets (every time I levered the rifle the buckboard would wiggle).  Hand the rifle off, using your staged pistols shoot the P targets.  Leap from the buckboard (my spur got caught in a floorboard crack so my leap wasn't as spectacular as I had planned).  Shotgun the KDs.

Three foot circle painted on the ground about ten feet in front of the firing line.  Inside the circle was a snake (foot long piece of a rubber garden hose).  Engage the snake with shotgun until the snake is knocked outside the circle.

Ace's from a deck of card clued to wood "backers".  Four steel rifle and pistol targets are shaped as a heart, diamond, club and spades.  At the BEEP!  Flip a card over, sweep the pistols cards starting with the suit of the card you flipped over.  Rifle, flip a second card over and sweep R starting with the second card you had flipped.

Sexy Sadie was her name.  She was in her mid-twenties I would guess, with a hour glass figure and narrow waist.  Red barroom type dress.  Always got the catcalls when the cowpokes saw her.  Engage the rifle targets, escort Sadie as you move to the shotgun position with her, engage shotgun targets.  Again with Sadie in tow move down range to engage the pistols targets.  Those were the days.  P.S. Sexy Sadie was a female manque with one arm missing.

Standing in front of the bar.  "I'm not taking back talk from you Bar Keep!" BEEP! You throw your glass of whiskey (water) in the barkeeps face.  Then you take the staged derringer (provided by the club) and shoot both barrels in the bar keeps face (and hits counted as bonuses). Then proceed with pistols, rifle, shotgun.

And there was "Boris" the galloping steed with a saddle hitched around his barrel chest and rocker legs.  A pistol holster on each side of his mane.   Shoot your pistols, reach for the rifle staged in a cowpokes outreach arms, hand the rifle off and reach for your shotgun also rifle staged in a cowpokes outreach arms.  I had to be quick before my legs cramped!  Boris was a hoot and a half.

Thinking deep thoughts in the outhouse when a BEEP! interrupts your thoughts.  You kick the outhouse door open and blast every Yahoo (targets) in sight.

Take the "bag of gold" with you as you run with lighting speed (fast walk for me) down range 25 feet and drop the gold into the well before engaging the pistol targets. Then turn around to run back up range 25 feet to get the bag of gold I had left behind, back down range to the well...

I really love this topic, and agree with most everyone. There is truth in the fact that the best way to represent change is to start at the lowest level. If anyone has ever been to RAMPAGE they know I mix it up with both close and fast as well as quirky stuff. Some factors that I consider are

1. Age (older shooters knees don't bend as well as younger ones)

2. Advantage ( I do my best to ensure there is no advantage from young to old, like the knee issue)

3. Simplistic but different. One stage everyone had to shoot the stage like a bandit, with a bandana over their face. It was fun, everyone thought it was hilarious and (no advantage).

4. I never make it so challenging that it turns away shooters. However, I do let shooters "vote with their feet" so far we have only gained numbers.

Example of how I break it up.

One stage you had to carry a drink tray to the bar (on the clock) but once you got to the bar it was a stand and deliver.

One stage was shot from a bathtub (the favorite). But you only had rifle and pistol targets.

Their is an easy way to make matches meet both standards. Just write it.

I said it once and  ill say it again "The fun isn't gone from Cowboy Action Shooting, people just forgot how to have it".

Moreover the fact is the fast people are still gonna win, and like Cody James said he likes to have options. One weekend you may feel like doing something crazy, while another you just wanna see how fast you can go. Match directors should know their audience and strive to make each shoot better than the last. If people leave the shoot smiling and laughing then you have done a good job and for me that's enough. Yes we you will always have one or two that complain about having do stuff as do we, but they always come back.

My 2 cents.

Wow, this is great. I miss all the fun cowboy shooting used to be. Montana,Wyoming, Idaho, Colorado,Utah ,Nebraska, Kansas( not leaving other states out, just my experiences) still have all the movement and the funny things going on. And everyone still takes dressing like 1800’s in as part of it. When you go to a match and people wear jeans, tennis shoes and a Henley or wear a pair of chaps and a regular shirt it just takes away from what it started out as, playing cowboy and dressing the part. Lots more laughing and having fun. Everyone going out after and making a day of it. I still love it but miss the old times.

I was sitting front and center at the TG meeting in the Old Frontier when SASS #1 Judge Roy Bean stated uncategorical that No Levi's would be allowed at EOT! (He said Levi's, not Jeans). Well, the theme of EOT that year was "The Silver Screen", Of course most of the characters in the Silver Screen Westerns wore Levi's. Well, they had to back pedal. SASS legal or not, I prefer not to see folks wear Wranglers or any other modern jeans. IMO it takes away from the atmosphere.

It always amazes me when I hear complaints about someone wearing "jeans" or short sleeves, etc that  wreck the atmosphere of the match when they're standing next to a bright green baby buggy gun cart with a rainbow color umbrella attached to it and their guns are staged on a plastic folding table!:)

p.s. no references to posters in this thread are intended or implied.:D

All types of athletic shoes or combat boots, no matter the material from which they are constructed.

The penalty for the use or presence of these items is a SDQ, so why not point that out and make the call?  A SDQ for tennis shoes should be a powerful learning experience for that shooter.

Jeans, whether Levis or Wranglers, are SASS legal and long sleeved Hensley shirts are specifically mentioned as legal so what's the issue?

Howdy,

Do you think perhaps there is a difference between what is funny or what is fun?

Funny = humorous, amusing & comical

Fun = enjoyable, pleasurable & agreeable

I prefer shooting a match that is Fun rather than Funny. Just my personal preference, no judgement being passed on others.

Well, exactly what is stopping y'all from having "Good Old Day Matches"? If you want to have matches of yesteryear, put it together, make it happen and stop blaming other folks. Who's stopping you?

Exactly!  Bordertown has built a reputation and sells out with its big and close approach.  I would love to see a club put on a throwback match with all the bells and whistles and let's see how it turns out.  If there's truly broad interest in that type of match it should be easy to establish one and sell it out.  I for one would come to it at least once (distance permitting) just for the experience.

In addition to the fact that a saloon girl can shoot in any of the other categories, technically speaking... there is already a saloon girl costume category...We just don't call it that...

SHB page 7

Classic Cowboy/Classic Cowgirl Category

In addition to the above items, ladies may choose from the items listed below in
order to compete within this category: Period watch, split riding skirt, bustle,
hoops, corset, Victorian style hat (straw allowed), period jewelry, period hair
ornaments (e.g., feathers)
, snood, reticule (period handbag), period lace up shoes,
camisole, bloomers, fishnet stockings, feather boa, or cape.
