Anyone here have any experience with the original guns

Can you safely shoot AA Featherlite's

I'll be loading BP rounds. Did you cut them down to get to the 2 5/8

Any feedback would be helpfull

Thanks

Think about it.  Smokeless powder wasn't available to the civilian market until after 1895.  I think credit goes to 30-30 for being the first smokeless cartridge and I think it was introduced in 1895.  The Winchester 1893 was a black powder gun. The 1897 was a redesign for smokeless.  Winchester dropped the 1887 and introduced the 1901 in 10 gauge. I think it was after 1900 when Colt made changes in the metal in their SAA and certifying them for smokeless.

The simple answer is, even if you lengthen the chamber to 2-3/4" it's still black powder only.   And, the action itself is designed with the 2-1/2" shell in mind.   You may find that the longer ones will get stuck when trying to eject them.   Even though the chamber on my 87 has been lengthened, it still only gets short shells.  Same with my Burgess.   And even with the short shells, BP only.   Same with my 93.

I trim AA's to 2-1/2" or use Magtech all brass.
