Need Help Identifying New Army Mod. 1860 & Holster

George ‘Spades’ Lee III

Recommended Posts

Hello, I’m curious about this firearm. My grandfather died a few years back and his wish was that his firearms were to go to me. Now I wasn’t big into black powder, muzzleloaders, or anything like that as he was. I much preferred cartridge guns and was enjoying things like his old marlin, gallery guns,  trapdoors, etc...

However, the more I’ve found out about what he was into (re-enactments and muzzleloaders / percussion) the more I have been interested and thus why I joined SASS with his name.

However, this revolver is hard to place for me. It has no manufacturer roll marks, import marks, etc... just inspection marks of “S”on Barrel, frame, cylinder, grips, trigger guard. 131 on the bottom of the barrel, back of the cylinder, and tip of the base the cylinder spins on.

Also has some cartouches stamped BMS on the grips.

And CS and left side of Barrel, assumingly for Confederate States reproduction.

The serial number is A101XX.

Also threw in a few pics of the holster if it meant anything.

I appreciate any help.

P.S. Item is never for sale, I am just curious.

Warmly,

Spades

It looks like an earlier Italian replica, that's been defarbed, artificially aged and restamped, to look like an old original. A lot of re-enactors have that done. It's hard to tell the original manufacturer because all the original Italian markings are gone. I'm sure someone more knowledgeable than myself will be able to tell you from the legend on top of the barrel.

Bruce is correct though, go to the website he posted and check it out. Lots of Colt and Colt clone knowledge there.

+1

He's on the Colt site I posted and the 58 Remington forum...

The best way to tell an original from a defarb is the screws. The Italians use metric screws, Sam Colt does not...

First, there is no question that this is NOT an original Colt's M1860 Army. If nothing else, the "A" prefix on the serial number indicates it is a replica, probably Italian, though I have no idea which Italian company made it. Most likely it is a Uberti, imported by some outfit, possibly Navy Arms, but there were several other importers in the late 1960's.  Best of luck and Happy New Year!
