I put my hands on a couple of boxes of Federal Low Recoil-Subsonic 12guage Target Loads.   I am wondering if there are any shooters out there that have used this ammo for CAS.

Did you like it?

Could you tell a difference?

As you can tell from the pictures, it is an 'odd-duck' of sorts.  One box is marked as Target Loads and the other box is marked as High Velocity, Upland Load, Ultra-Pheasant.  They are high-brass shells and the specs on BOTH boxes show a muzzle velocity of 900 FPS so I dont know why Federal would label one of them as "High Velocity" just because they had a bird on the box.

They work great in all our SKB's .  Could not tell the difference between the recoil of the Low Noise Winchester's vs the Federal.  They are ribbed but come out easy and dependable.

They used to be called Metro loads, presumably because they could be used in indoor ranges in or near built up areas.  I have shot them in a '97 and they are OK.  Packaging is a little confusing, but the description on the cartridge is correct.

I did that a year or so ago.  They are fine in '97 but sometimes they stick in my SxS's (AA Featherlights never stick in those).

They are all I use now ... Have used them all year after another shooter put me on to them. The never stick in my Stoeger.

The 1 1/8 is a great load for WB, runs excellent out of mod 12 and 97’s. Dusty B

you know looking at this a little more I think they just used the wrong box with the pheasant on it.

I got some hulls that look a lot like the ones you pictured to reload with BP and could not get a Winchester primer to fully seat in them. Tried 6 hulls and they all refused to take Winchester primers. Primes lacked about 1/8 in from fully seating.

When I shoot smokeless I shoot the I shoot the Federal Top Gun Extra Lite Ammunition 12 Gauge 2-3/4" 7/8 oz #8 Shot . Recoil is just a little more than the LNLR AAs.

Best part is they are perfect for reloading with BP.

Been using these for 5 years since Hells Comin introduced me to them.  Work great in all my '97s.  About same recoil as Win. Featherlights but have 1 1/8 oz. of shot instead of 7/8 oz. of shot. "Slaps" any knockdown real hard.

Thanks Patagonia Pete for info on Rogers Sporting goods.  I work at a large gun store and checked my current wholesale. On "Special" is $75.00 a case and need $350.00 to get free freight.  Just ordered 2 cases and total cost is $119.98 which includes free UPS shipping.

These Federal shells were introduced many years ago to be used in the Metro Barrel. A company who sold many shotgun barrels, Hastings was the big promoter. They went out of business, but a Texas company  http://www.metrogun.com appears to sell the barrels and their web page mentioned those Federal shells. The barrels are a 32 inch extension to the regular shotgun barrel and screw into where the normal choke would screw in at the muzzle. The regular choke tube would then screw into the muzzle of the extension.  Using those Federal shells and the extension you would have about 72 db of noise vs 151 or so for a regular shells and regular barrel.  The name Metro was sort of a way to say this offered a way to shoot closer to people areas with less disturbing noise , Nothing like swinging a five foot long barrel. I guess the cowboy market offers another  place for Federal to shell these shells

Have been using them for 3 or 4 years in Wild Bunch.  I also use these loads in Sporting Clays Matches when targets are 25 yards or less.  I did shoot a round of Trap at the 16yd line with them and shot a 25 straight.  Now they did take a couple of seconds longer to get to the target than with my trap loads

I think they were called metro loads because they were developed for a silenced shotgun called the metrogun.  Now, he may have called it the metro gun because of a desire to shoot it in populated areas.  I haven't studied on it enough to know that.

I shoot them in an 87.  I like them better than the featherlights because of the smell.  But they do have more recoil.  I've let 2 recoil sensitive shooters compare these rounds to featherlights and they both reported the featherlights were much better.

Been shooting them in 97's for about 10 years.  Bought a pallet of them with some friends.   Still use them today.   Low recoil and hard hitting on a target.  They are the only shells I use for major matches.

They were designed for that metro barrel.  Purpose of that barrel was a very quiet gun/barrel to shoot pigeons in the highly populated city areas.

I have shot them for a while (about 6 months) for a while I thought they were the cat's meow but I did get a box that had some over sized hulls. I never checked them in the months prior but on side match day of a major match I had two stick to the point I had to drop the hulls and pull them out with my finger nail and that was even tough. That would have cost me big in the MM.

Sure enough after case gauging them they were larger. I still use them (as I have 2 cases left) but I case gauge them all before they go in the cart. out of the last case I have about 6 hulls that are too big for the case gauge. So it's not a big deal but if yer' in-it-to-win-it I'd never shoot them without checking them first. Probably good practice with any brand in hind site.

For a 87 or 97 all that shouldn't matter.
