Colt SAA recall

The Original Lumpy Gritz

This recall deals with cracked frames. Looks to be just the ones made in 2018.

Didn't think they made any in '18 either. But, coming from a well respected site as I linked to. I have seen a couple of words on this recall elsewhere.

Did you look at the link I posted at all?

With the deep $$$$ issues Colt is having today, and their 1911 recalls.

This is gonna hurt'em. -_-

They've made quite a few in 2018. I have seen several. I don't know why people think that Colt isn't making SAA. They are. They just aren't taking custom orders because the backlog was reaching beyond 24 months.

And yes this recall is real. I know a few folks on the colt forum that have received the notice and sent theirs back. It's not on all of the 2018 one, but a select number range. I have an order with the custom shop that was due in shortly, but has since been pushed back with this recall.

You'd think with 145 years of practice they'd have this model figured out.

Well here's the kicker, and I just learned this. Colt doesn't make the frames. They subcontract it out to multiple vendors. One of the vendors supplied the frames that are on recall, which is why it's not all the 2018, just a certain serial number. Even more shocking than finding out that they don't make their own frames is finding out that they haven't made their own frames for any of the 3rd, nor 2nd gen guns.

Redwood just curious as to where or who led you to believe that Colt did not make their own

2nd and early 3rd gen frames.

Reason I ask is that being a Colt shareholder I was allowed on a factory tour some years back

I inquired as to SAA production, and they   showed us SAA frames in various stages of production ?!

Okay, I am willing to believe that the recall is a real one.

That being said, I find it curious all the nearly constant rumors that swirl around Colt.

They don't make SAA's anymore.

They do, but don't make the frames.

The are going back to the SAA being Custom Shop only.

They are going out of business.

They are moving out of Connecticut.

They are suspending sales of AR-15's to the civilian market.

They are bringing back one or more of the "snake" revolvers.

They use various Italian made parts in some of their guns.

These and many other stories about Colt I have read here and in other forums.  These were just the ones I could remember off the top of my head.   Over the years, most of these stories have proven to be untrue, and some of them have proved to be a slightly inaccurate version of reality.

What is it with Colt that it seems to generate so much gossip?   With all of these rumors constantly going around, is it any wonder that people are hesitant to do business with them?   Whatever else they may or may not need to do to make the company profitable, I think they need a better marketing or public relations campaign to let people know the truth of what the company is actually doing.

100% agree. People will post stuff about Colt here and other places based on what they've "heard" like it's the truth. I've called Colt directly about a few of these "rumors" and they set me straight that they're just that....... RUMORS!

Please folks don't post stuff that you have no proof of, Colt has their problems but we should be supporting them or at least not filling the internet with BS about them!

The proof is in the pudding.  Use the recent release of the Cobra snubby. I've seen better fit and finish on a Taurus 85. If you are gonna try to make a splash in a saturated market you have got to do better than just stamping Colt on a terrible gun. They are killing themselves by trying to be like everyone else, and that is not what made them. I'm a Marlin fanboy, but I can admit that Remington has absolutely screwed up that entire operation. Colt is hanging by a thread. Will be interesting to see how they try to change that. I hope they do.

I disagree, I had a Taurus 85 (gave it to my son) and I HAVE a new Colt Cobra,  The fit and finish is far better than Taurus. It shoots great also! I love my Cobra!;)

Colt's QC has been very spotty at best, for many years now.

The 2 'new' Cobra's I have held. Did not impress me at all.

The fit & finish I have seen on many of the new 1911's is poorly done.

That is what I'm talking about LG. I wish it were not true. But there is a reason that companies like Nighthawk etc. are doing well. Firearms executives care about one thing and that is profit. When you stop providing a reason to buy your product other than name then you have failed in epic fashion.

This is interesting. How were you a Colt share holder? Colt is a privately held company, not publicly traded.

Three current employees and the former custom shop manager. Now in all fairness, I don't believe any of these folks were alive during most of the 2nd gen production so they could just be passing on information told to them as well.

I talked to a couple of current employees and well as Ed Janus of Peacemaker Specialists who does a lot of work for Colt. Colt just had a piece on Facebook and Twitter about they they forge their own frames. I would suggest you call them and ask them directly, I trust what they say more than I would heresay from former employees!

Call who? Colt? The three folks I talked to are all current employees. One of them made me change my custom order from a BP frame to a cross pin frame because, and I quote "None of our current vendors are making the BP frame any longer." The only former employee is the custom shop manager, who knew the saa production intimately. Ed Janus, a guy a like who does great work by the way, doesn't work for Colt.

I know Ed doesn't work for Colt but he knows an awful lot about them. Colt sends guns to him for repairs. He told me a while ago himself that they forge their own frames. This could have changed since then ( earlier in the year) and it maybe they sent out just the BP frames because hardly anyone wants those anymore is my guess. I've had them and prefer the "modern" frame myself. That's just me though.

All I'm saying is there's alot of misinformation out there directed at Colt and I think it's unfair.

I agree with the misinformation out there. Perhaps you are correct about the BP frames, though that was one of the guys that gave me information on them using a vendor to forge the frames for 2nd and 3rd gen. A completely different rep, when I called last to inquire about the status of my now cross pin colt, said that they had an issue with one of the frame vendors and all custom orders are pushed back. This was a few weeks ago, right before they announced the frame recall. Now nobody told me that the two are related. Completely my assumption there. I'm just relaying information from actual Colt employees, that could be lying, but I don't know why they would in this instance.

And I love Colts too. It doesn't diminish Colt if they are using an outside source to forge the frames, just as long as they are on top of the process and ensuring the quality standards are met. Every company does it to some degree.

A friend of mine just took in delivery of a brand new Standard SAR. I like it a lot. It's beautiful in every way. I can't find a single flaw in it, other than it isn't a Colt. Knowing that, I would still rather have a Colt. Perhaps I am a fanboy, or whatever it is the kids say these days.

Wow! I can't beleave anyone knowlagable in firearms would praise Taurus. I have owned three. They were all garbage compared to the two colts I have owned. Fit and finish on my series 80 gold cup and the brand new Cobra I got for my wife are superb. Function is smooth and flawless. I still have a Taurus that has never worked without jamming and the blueing is blotchy with poor fitting wood. I got rid of the others because the were crude. I will never purchase another Taurus.

Haha, so it is. There is an issue I keep having with the colt forum and that is if I click on a link with my phone, it takes me to whatever thread I was currently looking at rather than what is linked. Not sure why. Anyway, it took me to a different than what you posted and now on my computer I can see it's the same. My bad

Howdy

Interesting post. Just today I was wondering if Colt was still making their own parts.

I have read over the years how Colt has been cutting down on the number of assemblers in the Custom Shop, but just today I was wondering if they were still making their own parts. Assembling guns is one thing, but without a source of supply for the parts, you can't build much.

From my experience in the manufacturing world, there are three ways to get parts.

1. You make them in house

2. You buy them from a vendor.

3. You buy parts from a vendor, but modify them in house if necessary.

I have no knowledge of this, but I would suspect that like much of the modern manufacturing world Colt may have been contracting out for parts for some time.

Howdy Again

I would not be a bit surprised if Colt had farmed out the manufacture of its frames. This is a hammer forge. This is the type of equipment needed to forge the frames for a firearm. They are huge.

450.58.1%201958_zps4wfcxsgz.jpg

This photo is from 1961. I have no idea why Lt. Keneipp is in uniform, but he is forging a frame on a 2000 pound hammer forge. With every stroke, the hammer drops a 2000 pound weight onto the hot forging to reshape it. Smith and Wesson had a pair of similar drop forges. When they moved into their 'new' factory around 1950 they found the pounding of the forges over the years had cracked the foundation of the old factory.

1st%20Lt.%20George%20E.%20Keneipp%20oper

Anyway, these are huge machines, and I would not be a bit surprised if Colt had farmed out the production of frames to a vendor who did nothing but forging.

Incidentally, when a visited the Smith and Wesson factory a few years ago, they were still operating two huge hammer forges to make frames. For insurance reasons we were not allowed into the forge area, as a matter of fact as I recall they were not working that day. But I saw bins and bins of X frame forgings that had been preliminarily shaped on the hammer forges and were waiting to be further machined on the CNC equipment.

  • 1 month later...

I actually bought a 2018 SAA and never received it because the seller had to send back to colt due to the cracked frame recall, they have it listed on their website, 2 months and I am out $2400 and no gun! I am not happy, I think the original Colts were something to have but I am burned now!

And my experience is just the opposite!  I have had the Taurus version of the Beretta 92 and 96, my wife has her 92 and I bought a 1911 “blue” version that all the bells and whistles shooting very accurately for an out of box 1911! And only $525!  We did have one issue, we had a PT 111 in .40 and I got some ammo that had Double charges cracked the frame. Off to Taurus and 3 weeks latter new gun. Would definitely recommend any Taurus!
