This is my immediate "neighborhood" - deputies have already been up my road a couple times and had a car parked at the highway a mile and a half down the hill for half an hour or so.

 

"Authorities are asking the public to be on the lookout for a blue Chrysler 300 with temporary registration after a Jefferson County deputy was shot at during an attempted traffic stop. The deputy was not injured.

The car was last seen traveling eastbound on Canyon Ferry Drive from Lake Helena, according to an alert from the Lewis and Clark County Sheriff's Office. The vehicle was occupied by three males.

If the vehicle is located, do not approach it. Contact the sheriff’s office at 406-442-7883 or dial 911.

The suspects are considered armed and dangerous."

There used to be a time when most thugs knew better than to kill a cop, lest they be hunted down and killed like the vermin they are or else put on death row. Nowadays however they won't hesitate to do so, because the retribution isn't nearly as severe. And to think they say we've become more progressive as a society. Who in the world would ditch a car in 25º weather and run through the snow in the woods in the dark anyway? I suppose 3 cop shooter-atters who don't want to spend 10 years in the state penitentiary.

They're trapped on the road they took - there are a lot of dirt roads going deep into the mountains, but there's a lot of snow up there and the paved two lane just loops around the other side of Canyon Ferry reservoir for 30 miles and comes back out at a little town on the south end of the lake. There is no other way to drive out of the Big Belt Mountains, and both ends have police checkpoints.

When I finally couldn't take it anymore and filed for divorce back in 2000, she fed the sheriff's department a big story about abuse, death threats, guns, etc., and they ended up sending no less than SIX cars/TWELVE deputies to my place of employment to execute a felony arrest warrant on me. It was... tense... as she told them I was carrying, kept guns & ammo in my work locker, and would "shoot any cop on sight".

$25,000 bail - I have the bond receipt framed and hanging on the wall. No one in my family has ever been worth that much.

I spent a few days in jail, some time with an ankle monitor, and 3 years on supervised probation with deferred sentencing rather than risking trial... based on nothing more than one single person's unfounded accusations...

 

... and something close to $250,000 in combined cost of travel/airfare, fines, supervision fees, court costs, bail bond, vandalism to buildings and vehicles, and legal fees across three states, defending myself from her for two years til the divorce was final.

They somehow got out of the Belt Mountains and were arrested without incident in Idaho this afternoon, still driving the same car.

 

(edit) Now they're reporting they were nabbed in a casino near Blackfoot, ID, but had a different vehicle and the original car hasn't yet been located. Whatever, at least all three are in custody.

Wow, I thought my divorce was painful, turns out I had some of the same situations but it was done & dusted in only 18 months.

Three real dandies here - several previous convictions, outstanding warrants, 4 guns and drugs found on their person and in their vehicle, plus over $13,000 in cash.

 

Holloway (left) was charged with grand theft, possession of a stolen firearm and possession of methamphetamine, all felonies.

Schmidt (center) was charged with felony counts of trafficking heroin and unlawful possession of a firearm.

Merengo (right) was charged with a felony count of trafficking heroin.

 

Looks like Merengo maybe wasn't arrested entirely "without incident".

 

Add to that, Montana charges of Attempted Deliberate Homicide and felony evasion for all three.

 

Angie Marie Ahern-Krogstead, a California woman, was arrested in connection with the Montana crimes by the Idaho State Police who allegedly found meth and cocaine on her person. She was booked in the Bannock County, Idaho, jail, the news release said.

Our legal system in the United States has determined that only folks with a Y chromosome get that kind of treatment. Think of it as punishment for being born male. 

But be that as it may, I'm not planning on a gender change anytime soon.

Only during the probationary period. At the end of the 3 years, I returned to court, entered a plea of not-guilty, my record was cleared/charges expunged, and rights restored.

It's sad to hear you had to go through all that J Bar,  but not hard to believe it seem's like lady justice has her eye on the dollar sign more than justice these day's.  Seem's like the justice system will entertain anything to spread the wealth around the whole court system especially in the civil arena.
