For those that have the Howell Conversion Cylinders, I have a specific question.  Do the cylinder throats match 38 Special ammo (.356-.359 diameter) or do they match the 36cal bore (.375-.380 diameter)?  I love shooting Frontiersman, but it sure would be nice to practice with smokeless rounds.  I ask about the throat size because I am wondering if I could use a heeled bullet to match the 36cal bore which I think would be ideal for both accuracy and leading.  Or if the throats are standard 38 Special sized which would mean I'd have to try a soft lead hollow base bullet and hope for the best when they fly into that large 36cal barrel.

Why not call and ask him:  https://www.howellarms.com/

or

Hollow-based wadcutter loads work great out of your .36 with a conversion cylinder.

Load 'em with 1/4 inch sticking out of the brass.

Thanks for the links and replies so far.  Either way, I will be casting my own bullets so there is not a difference in cost.  I am mainly wondering if the cylinder chambers are bored straight through or if they are stepped like a standard 38 special chamber?  If they are stepped there is no point to bother with heeled bullets.

Yes, they are expensive.   There is someone else who makes them for a much more reasonable rate, but I've not had a reason to buy any for a long time now.   Next time I'll use the someone else.  I mostly mention these as a reference.

And even though they could be used in .38 Specials, I don't.   To expensive.   Heck,  normally I use a much cheaper .360" bullet for the S&W round, but for Short and Long Colts, since I don't use healed bullets, these things are the best way to go.   They fit inside the case, but then expand to work with the larger bores.
