Flintlocks and Jaeger Rifles

Recommended Posts

Once or twice a year I get the urge to buy a nice flintlock rifle I can both shoot and use for demonstrations.  I'm currently going thru that phase.  As I've been looking thru miscellaneous websites to see what is available and at what cost I've noticed two things:  1- Almost all the offerings I've found are for new guns.  Now, I'm not looking, nor could I afford, an original antique.  But, where are the used guns?  Somebody, somewhere, has to have a used gun for sale.  2- Jaeger rifles are really neat looking.  A bit different from the Kentucky and Pennsylvania rifles, and still appropriate for the Colonial era encampment.  I want a rifled gun that is more accurate than I am.  (Not a super difficult feat)  If I miss my target I want to be confident that it was my fault.

So, where is a good place to look for a deal on a used flintlock rifle?

Next, the only repro Jaeger rifle I could find was made by Pedersoli.  Does anyone here have any experience with them?  Also do you know who sells them and for how much?  I saw them on the Pedersoli website, but without prices.  Does anyone else make a flintlock Jaeger rifle?

Answer quick before the urge to spend a bunch of money leaves me again.  :)

Thanks,

I agree.  I have no question about Pedersoli's quality, I just don't know who actually sells them or for how much.   The Jaegers, that is.

The track of the wolf Jaeger kit is interesting, although pricey.  The problem is that I know me.  It'd probably still be sitting in kit form 15 years from now.

Pricey? That's cheap compared to a lot of kits I've seen.

You might find used if you ask around at the Americanlongrifles site I posted earlier, but I doubt anything cheap.

Dixie gunworks has one, but it's $1400+

Pedersoli offers an outstanding Percussion Target Rifle.  Well priced at 2,800 Euro.  US importer of Pedersoli is Taylors.  Pedersoli also offers a nice hunting flinter but I didn't see a price.  Would suggest you consider talking to yer Broker.  Perhaps even take yer Broker to Lunch.  Make it a really nice Lunch.

Funny you post this as I to am an occasional flintlock browser and only last week researched this for myself (more problems from an importing point of view for me).

You do have another option in that you can buy a Baker Rifle, these were based on the Jager design and used in America by various Armies (against you in the main I understand).

I will post three links here for you.

First is a company that makes the rifle without touch hole and with a smooth bore barrel.  The second is a company that makes the rifled barrel that retrofits the first into a rifled Baker.

Your other option is the Rifle Shoppe and I will post that link last.

The Baker is a nice looking gun, too.  I'd actually never heard of them until I started watching Sharpe's Rifles.  Tempting at about half the price of the Jaeger kit.  Too bad it's not rifled.  Adding another $200 for a rifled barrel is still cheaper than the Jaeger kit.  No offense to anyone, but $1000+ for a KIT is pretty pricey to me.  Heck, $1000 bucks is nothing to sneeze at whatever I'm buying.  I never have understood why flintlocks are so much more expensive than other guns.

$1400 for a Pedersoli Jaeger from Dixie?  I'm going to have to think pretty hard about spending that much.  Especially if I can't see it in person first.  Maybe a trip down that way would force me to put up or shut up.  Then again, the lottery is pulled tonight.......  If I were rich I wouldn't have to worry so much about spending that kind of money.  If I win the big bucks I'll buy one of each.

The video makes the Jaeger look even better than the pictures I've seen.
