My Brother Loves his Rossi 92

Not too long ago, my brother was telling me how he wanted one of those Israeli Timberwolf pump rifles in .357 Magnum.  He said he knew they were rarer than hen's teeth, but he really wanted a rifle in .357 with a manual action.  And he loves pump guns..

As some of you may know, I am a fan of the AWA Lightning clone, and while did try to find a .357 Lightning, they are not exactly easy to find either.  Oh sure, I could have ordered a Pedersoli, but they are kinda pricey and he wants to use it for a knock around small game/pinkler gun.  He does not shoot CAS.  I would not inflict a Taurus on him!

About two weeks ago, I was at a gunshow and found a NIB Rossi 92 in the desired caliber.   Bought for him, and he really likes it.   This past weekend, he took it up to his cabin in NH to do some shooting, and told me that he was hitting lillypads off hand at 75 yards with it.  He did say that he found the action to get a little clunky when it was loaded, but he didn't seem too put off by that.  I did mention how I know of many gunsmiths who are experts with it, but he thinks he's gonna leave it at is, or perhaps reference some YouTube videos on how to do the action work himself.   He's not a gunsmith, but he is an airline mechanic.  If he can fix Airbus 380's, I'm sure he can figure out a simple mechanical device like a rifle!

Anywhoo, I am happy to report that he found the rifle to be perfectly functional, if not "perfect."   I told him about many of the accessories available for the gun to make it run better, and while he was curious, I don't know if he plans to avail himself of any of them.

For what it's worth, he's also got a Ruger and 2nd Gen Colt in this caliber.    Maybe someday I'll convince him to give CAS a try.

You cannot beat the video that Nate Kiowa Jones did on the Rossi 92.  Not only does it show the best method for assembly and dissssembly it has easy to follow step by step instructions for slicking up the gun.

If nothing else I highly recoment the extractor ejector spring and SS mag follower modifications

I'm thinking you meant ejector spring.

Get the tune up kit from Steve Gunz (Nate) with the DVD. All the parts are under 100 bucks and you can do all the steps in under an hour or so with a bench grinder. It turns the 92 from clunky to slick as lightning. Just make sure to also swap out the ejector spring and the main spring with Nate's.

IF you want it slick and smooth this is the way.

I have 2 real Winchesters and 2 clones.  A Rossi and an Arm San Marco.   The ASM was so bad out of the box that for the first time ever, I had an action job done.   Told the gunsmith, "I don't want a race gun.  I just want it smooth like a real Winchester."   He did a great job.

I just finished slickin' my Rossi 92 in .357 yesterday. I got the kit and dvd from Steve Gunz. This gun came from a previous CAS member. It had some polishing done to a lot of places but none where Steve said to make mods. The top of the lugs were polished, which looked nice but did nothing to help the action. When I first got it the action was so bad I had to squeeze the lever shut to chamber a round. There was dried up white litium junked up in there but not enough cause issues, (I think). The springs were stock, and the hammer spring was so tight it bent the captive pin. I took of 4 coils and was just able to get that pin back in. The ejector spring was so hard I couldn’t squeeze it. I found a lot of burrs and used a honing stone to smooth those out.
I will have to make adjustments to the trigger spring and the hammer spring. But at this point, this gun cycles with one finger.
Thank you Steve Gunz
