Just watched (and delighted in) your Whiskey in the Old West.

My Granddad, rest his soul, was a moonshiner and a moonrunner, and he taught me well -- hak-kaff! Har-rumph! I mean I listened politely to his tall tales!

(Insert innocent expression here!)

Moon likker is water clear; the first of the distillation run and the last of the distillation run contains impurities the old timers called "Fusel Oil" -- the middle of the run is the good stuff.

Good, middle of the run, properly made Liquid Sledgehammer, goes down like Mama's milk and blows the socks right off your feet.

The firsts and lasts are the Pop Skull that gives the big head and the bad belly.

Char yourself a little brown sugar in a skillet, dissolve this in the whiskey to get your amber color, and add a couple drops of glycerine so it'll cling to the sides of a glass when you swirl it.

Uncle Will Scott from Salesville , rest his soul, was a butcher and a moonshiner.

He made Uncle Will's Finest, which has featured (for some odd reason) in Firelands: half and half moon likker and homemade wine.

My best friend found some in a stone jug that slept for 75 years under his basement stairs.

He poured me out one finger's worth in a water glass.

One finger's worth.

I must've given him a funny look because he said quietly, "Buddy Joe, that's all you want!"

He was right.

That was the first time anything I'd drunk, walked up behind me and belted me a good one!

I was quite content to set my backside in the nearest rockin' chair and just set there!
