How about this sequence

Recommended Posts

As Creeker mentioned in another post, a stage should flow like a dance.  This sequence seems to want to break up any flow.  But, can be tweaked to make it work.  That said, you write it, I'll shoot it... but good stage writing should make shooters look forward to returning to your shoots.

Rather than hijack Cheyenne Culpepper's post, I thought I would ask on a different one.

How about;

4 targets    1, 2 ,2, 3, 3, 4, 1, 4, 2, 3

DB

I love it but I still like mine better! :D 1,4,2,3,1,4,2,3,1,4

IMO, if the sequence does not have "a flow", as Creeker suggests, then the stage becomes a TOs nightmare to help the majority that have "mental stalls" shooting it.

The best sequences are ones that either "flow" from one target to the next.

Nevada sweep

Double tap sweeps

Are balanced with a symmetry across the target array.

3-2-2-3

1-2-4-2-1

3-1-2-1-3

Or have some sort of an intuitive progression or repetition.

1,2-2,3-3-3,4-4-4-4

Inside-inside-outside-outside-middle

Herky jerky sequences which attempt to dispose of X number of rounds across Y number of plates without regard to the above can quickly turn into P traps and memory contests.

Some of the odder sequences can be used, but you must assist your shooters with target shape, color or placement.  And you have to plan for these assists as you write the stage or pull steel.

The match directors desire to set something "different" can lead to sequences and stages which stop being fun and become obstacles.

+1

And, IMO, size and target positioning can make the flow more meaningful and doable.  A sequence may read in shooter's program, or even appear in diagram there, as difficult but when shooter is actually at stage "the flow" becomes evident.

Recently shot a five target sequence of  333, 1, 5, 2, 4, 333 (center-center-center-outside-outside-inside-inside-center-center-center).  When I read sequence in book and looked at diagram I felt second pistol would "be drawn" to target #3 (center), but in front of targets, as set, it did not seem the "P" trap I thought it might be.  second pistol "flowed" right to an inside target (in my case #2).

Everytime I see these sequence threads I think about that scene from Friends with Monica and the seven zones.

A gunfighter with a left lead will like it; everyone else will want to lynch you, and I wouldn’t blame them at all.

Yep, almost.   Don't forget the first round of the second five shots would go on 3.
