That’d mean shades and windows on the porch!!

I mean like roll up bamboo shades!!

My grandfather and I made split bamboo shades for his front porch when I stayed with him one summer.  He had a screened in front porch that faced west. In the afternoons, it would get scorching hot when the sun shined.  He bought a bundle of bamboo and cut it to the width of the windows and split it all himself.

We spent two whole days tying the strips and he installed ‘em with little pulleys and a boatman’s loop on each one.

They didn’t have a hammock. There was a hanging glider with a big pad on one end of the porch. That’s where I took my afternoon naps and where he’d sit in evenings and talk to the neighbors and the postman and all the food wagons that went up and down the street.

I stayed with them for three summers! My granddad taught me many skills, in the basement of the house and on that porch.
