Randingo
Other than shooter preference, any benefit or advantage to the straight stock vs. the pistol grip stock on a 73?

Silver Sam, SASS #34718L
Personal Preference..... I like the angle of the pistol grip lever, but the wrist of the gun feels too large in my hand. Overall, I prefer a straight stock Carbine.
Major Art Tillery
I like the looks of a straight stock.
John Boy
When shooting out to a 1000yds, a pistol grip helps to draw the rifle into the shoulder tighter and be able to hold it there. Other than this straight stocks are OK
J-BAR #18287
My old arthritic fingers are more comfortable in a straight lever, but for most folks I doubt it makes any difference.

Pat Riot
I like straight stocks on my rifles but pistol grip shotgun stocks. I think the pistol grip helps with the recoil. It helps hold the stock tighter to the shoulder, as John Boy said.
McCandless
I think it is Personal preference. I saw one person post that the straight stock was faster for them. I have both, can't tell a difference as far as speed in use and prefer the pistol grip.
Southpaw Gringo, SASS # 74217
I like a "pistol grip" 73 solely because it more closely matches the feel of my shotguns be it a 97 or an SKB. That's pretty much it.
BLACKFOOT SASS #11947
I like straight stocks on rifles and on my 12ga side x side shotguns. Have never tried straight on model 97's or 12's. Blackfoot

Shooting Bull
There actually are a couple of major differences, but it still comes down to personal preference. Difference #1: Sight picture when you mount the rifle. Take one of each style and quickly bring them up to shooting position with your eyes closed. Once in position open your eyes and see how well the sights are aligned. Usually one will align better for you. Difference #2: Angle of the lever. With a straight stock the lever is basically horizontal when the action is closed. With a pistol grip the lever is at an angle to the ground when the action is closed. Some folks find one or the other more comfortable.

Tennessee williams
I like the straight stock better. I aquire the sight picture quicker, and have a more positive trigger pull with it.
Amarillo Rattler
‘73 straight stock 20” barrel in 38. ’73 pistol grip stock 24” barrel in 44-40. Once the buzzer sounds, the only difference I notice is the amount of smoke. 16 gr of 3F vs 26 gr of 3F. Just sayin’ Amarillo Rattler
Randy Saint Eagle, SASS # 64903
I like the pistol grip, mostly for looks but when the beep sounds I can't tell the difference. Randy
Badlands Bob #61228
The pistol grip stocks seem to cost more so they must be better, right? I think it's stickly personal preference.
Randingo
Passed my Marlin onto my nephew and will be getting my first 73 tomorrow. I like the looks of the pistol grip but can't tell any difference when handling or shouldering either. Thanks for your comments!!!
