I bet the Navy has this job every time they break polar ice caps.

I can confirm that.  After the Hammerhead sailed under the ice cap we had a lot of work to do in the sail.

What it is, is............they push a Navy SEAL out one of the torpedo tubes and have him remove it before contact with the ice.

The SEAL is armed with a sharp ice pick and chisels his way up to the top and rejoins his feller shipmates back on the sub with the undamaged antenna.

Once on board the Sub, he gets a nice bonus of a good T-bone steak AND a picture of him holding the antenna before its placed back on the sub.

PLUS, as a bragging bonus, he gets a sticky of an antenna, which is normally stuck onto his hardshell gun case..... :D

..........Widder

Yah, I noticed too!

My ex-brother-in-law was in sub service and has a pic of his sub having broken thru the ice. On his boat, the diving planes were on the sail and could rotated vertically to act as cutters. Cool pic.

OK ... dumb question of the day - WHY do submariners wear caps?  Indoors, not even a window.  WHY do they need the ball caps?

Several reasons.

Those at the dive station to shade their eye from the overhead lighting.

To keep the headphones from hurting after wearing 6 hours.

Worn as an overhead equipment locator before your head.

Actually it seemed to be optional.

Look at other videos and you will be hard pressed to find ball caps worn.

So, it is my opinion the ball caps where worn for the making of the video.
