SASS, The Early Days

Not a thing..Except reconnecting with old SASS Pards from the earlier days of SASS and catching up

after a much too long hiatus...A few of us have had med issues that 'forced' them to retire' from competitive shooting , Like Me, and missing the old days of SASS and bringing old friends up to speed on what 's been going on and what in my case, one of the things I've done to make up for not being able to cowboy any longer...

I agree with you, out of place perhaps on the SASS Wire, but like i said it's mainly about reconnecting with what was a huge part of my life for 12 years and  a lot of very old pards that i miss from my SASS days.

SASS was a major part of my life for a long time

My apologies if I was out of line

Shorty, you are an icon from the earlier days of SASS and still a wealth of information on Colts.  This is a perfect place for you and others from the Early Days of SASS to reminisce and catch up on current activities.   Keep doing what you are doing.

Thanks Jim

Very kind of you indeed

after 16 orthopedic and neurosurgeries ,

mostly back , neck , and 2 artificial shoulders, in 2014 when my wife passed away, I gave up my Class III FFL and retired not only from business but from SASS competition ... Reluctantly, but no choice. To say I miss it would be an

understatement! Surprisingly I still get a lot of calls from SASS Pards regarding Colts which I am only to happy to discuss . As you know , Colt has radically changed now that CZ purchased them

I can tell you with authority that ANY generation of Colt SAA and 1911’s are an ever appreciating investment

Colts are already making nice profits and will continue to do so

They will never be made again as an American treasure by Colt

sure, CZ will be making Colts; but to purists like me that have spent the better part of my life as a Colt Dealer Custom Shop Dealer and Colt collector, RIP Colt ! Hang on to those  genuine Colts!

They are truly American Icons!

Quotes from Craig Hanson, "Big Jake, SASS #1001...

"Only One Handgun back then. In 1985-86-87 we could use Winchester 30-30 and 45-70 as a main match rifle. we used wrist watches and stopwatches for a timer. Things changed with SASS in late 1987 and End of Trail 1988 and up."

"Targets back then were poured cast steel and had many pockmarks from hits and craters from hard hits from the 30-30's, .38-55' and .45-70's. had several bounce backs that hit people and cut the skin. I had a .45-70 hit and bounce back, skid off the ground, hit a shed behind me, and bounce to hit me in the Cowboy Boots above the ankle. Black n Blue for two weeks. SASS started using AR (Abrasion Resistant) Steel and no more pockmarks and craters. Just a bullet Splash in the dirt. But also went with Pistol only calibers in the Rifles."

"Some of our guys were a little upset when they banned the rifle calibers. One had his 30-30 all set up and dialed in and the other had been working, for months, on getting his 45-70 '86 to be competitive."

Actually, the rifle calibers as a main match rifle ended in 1985.  My 1st monthly match was in late summer 1985; I brought my 94 Winchester in .30-30 to use, and had to borrow a rifle... This was at Coto De Caza with the Wild Bunch!   Sometimes known as the Coto Cowboys!

I was told that EOT '85 was the last use of a rifle caliber as a main match gun. I know they weren't allowed in '86 or any later except as long range entries.

EOT 1986 Long Range Side Match.  Maybe the ONLY time a non-cartridge rifle was used.  I didn't finish last, but quite far behind 1st!!!

"Here's one of my brother Whiney Henry Yoho & myself.  I'm guessin' about a dozen years back or so. Match was called True Grit, Roseburg, Oregon. Whiney's smilin' big cuz' it was a two day match with 10 stages with 4 pistols, 2 rifles & a shotgun. Ammo count per stage approximately 50 rounds per stage. We'd do that one & feel like all the other matches after that one seem like not much shootin'. LOL"

I shot my first CAS match with a 1886 in 45-70......It was all I had at  the time and the guys said, "Go for it!"  Man, I was sure beat by the end of the match.......
