Hardcase Hardin
Just saw this one come up in my YT feed again and decided to watch it....again. Hickok45 presents the Dos and Don'ts of shooting steel that everyone can benefit from, especially new shooters who might be thinking of setting up their own practice range. Enjoy and be safe. Attica Jack #23953
Interesting video. I shoot steel targets often. The steel targets I have are all AR500 grade. When I built my dueling tree, I put a forward lean of the target stand at 18 degrees, so far no splatter coming back. I use shooting glasses with side shields. Shooting steel is fun, but you have to be aware of the problems you can have.
Sedalia Dave
Watch that your dueling trees are not throwing bullets at right angles to your firing line. One of the ranges I shoot at had one. We were 75 to 100 yards to the right of it on a common firing line with a 7 foot high berm separating us from the guys shooting the dueling tree. While I was down range fixing a target they started shooting the tree. I could hear their rounds impacting the weeds and dry grass on the side of the far berm surrounding the range I was on. Was not a good feeling. Talked to the range master and the dueling tree got removed.
Attica Jack #23953
All my rounds go in a straight line, 90 degrees from the shooting line, no more than 8 feet from the tree.
Cowboy Junky
The reason many sports do the 10 yard minimum is because they shoot jacketed bullets. In SASS we don't so that minimum can be less for that reason.
