Traveling to CAS stage events

This summer I am planning to travel from here to the west coast then up the coast and return here abou 10 weeks later. I would like to visit as many CAS clubs and participate on the weekends in stage events were possible.

I have a concern with CA, OR, and WA with their anti Second Amendment state laws and hostility toward citizens with firearms and ammunition. Does CA actually have roadblocks on the interstate and search cars for firearms? If I were to follow the Federal rules for transporting firearms and ammunition will I still be harassed by State and local police?

Any experience or thoughts on this would be appreciated.

I don't find OR or WA gun laws that bad.  I have traveled to CA many times and never seen a roadblock.  (Years ago they had agricultural inspection stations.)  Do read about California's requirements for transporting firearms.  They are stricter than most states.  I travel armed in New Mexico but would never do that in California.  I recommend getting a gun safe for your vehicle.  Most SASS clubs are in rural areas where the local police are not under the thumbs of anti-gun politicians and they will not be looking to harass a gun owner.

 

If you shoot EOT in New Mexico, there will be shoots in nearby states before and after that match.  The Oregon coast via US101 is a lovely drive with lots of state parks and secluded beaches.  Take a side trip east of Portland to the Columbia River Gorge and see numerous waterfalls.  In California I recommend a route that takes you past Mt. Shasta and through the coastal redwoods.  (I'm a Northern California native and former resident of Oregon).

California has agriculture  check stations at all of your major freeway and alot of secondary road,but they DO NOT search for firearms

Thank you all for responding. I appreciate all your comments and advice. The rumors I was hearing are apparently untrue. CA seems to be in competition with itself to be the most restrictive gun laws state. I wonder what will happen if the National Reciprocity Act get passed by Congress and signed by the President.

 

Being a greenhorn CAS participant I will be shooting all over the northeast before starting cross country. I am setting up with gear for two people in case someone travels with me with their firearms. I am trying to keep the weight of gear down as I will be camping frequently right in the Caravan on the cross country trip. 

 

I will have a 4 rifle lockable case similar to this product https://www.americase.com/product/AT-4GUN for the back of the Dodge Caravan since there is no truck in this vehicle. The intent is that all the firearms will be stored in this case. They will all be unloaded with snap caps under firing pins. This should comply with all the states and the Federal requirements.

 

Ammo is already stored separately in typical military surplus steel lockable ammo boxes for each caliber or ga. of ammo. 

I am thinking of this kind of lightweight gun cart for events while traveling http://www.classicusc.com/store/p/34-Rugged-Gear-Deluxe-4-Gun-Cart-Combo-Package.aspx .

Cross country trip this summer July, August, September 2018. Westbound along I-80 with side trips. North along the west coast. Eastbound on I-90. Two and a half months on the road.

 

Next summer 2019, God willing, Westbound I-70 south to Arizona and then east by various routes. North along the Atlantic coast. This trip I will try for EOT and maybe May, June, and July.

Bucket list include seeing every Natl. Park, etc. along the way. All my extended family too.

Now how will I fit Alaska and Hawaii in too. I hate to fly.

RG carts are GTG. Been using one for over 8 yrs now. Their C/S is outstanding.

In CA-make sure the handguns are in a locked container of some type, and you'll be GTG.

You will be traveling the hottest time of year, so be aware of the Desert heat here.

Forget about taking your handguns through Canada on your way to Alaska. Most ship them from USA to gun shop in Alaska and do the same on return. Long guns are quite easy to transport through Canada. Just fill out appropriate paperwork ahead of time and be on your way.

 

Unless California created some rule that flies in the face of the ICC, there is no prohibition on transporting firearms anywhere within the USA....As long as they are secured out of your control and you are legal to posses them in your home state.

 

I suggest locked gun cases, ammo in a locked case....in the trunk if you have one. Glove compartment and center console does not qualify as a locked case out of your control......

I live in Oregon but travel between Oregon and Washington to shoot without any problem.  Hope to shoot with you while you travel it always nice to shoot with the east coast pards.

That's why you shouldn't always listen to rumors. While California has a lot of bad gun laws on the books, we are no where near as bad as a few of the other states. And sales here are consistently in the top 5 nationwide, despite having the dreaded roster to deal with. There are other states where you can't even buy a colt. In New York, getting a handgun takes a lot longer than a 10 day wait. There are worse indeed.

Oregon and Washington do not have the draconian rules of Kalifornia. You need to follow Canada's gun laws to bring firearms into and through the country. Further, you need to fill out and retain the US Customs form to bring your firearms back to the USA. You will need an "Authorization To Transport" for each shooting match.Contact the RCMP's firearms office website for further information. There are some specific prohibited firearms including but not limited to 4 inch barrels and ,25 caliber pistols.

 

I shoot regularly in British Columbia, Alberta, Manitoba and Saskatchewan. I have a Canadian pistol license but one time visitors  need only the Canadian Customs forms. Again, contact the RCMP Firearms office for detailed information.

I have never had a problem over the decades with transporting firearms and competing with them in Canada, Oregon and Washington.

i cannot discern where you are starting from , if you follow 80 west you need to come a long way north to get here and where i shoot but the wi-mn-sd/nd offers a lot of great shoots , no roadblocks or gun searches in my experience , but ive not done that left coast area drive , there is others ill do first , if you do a little checking and no advertising you should be fine i think , just sayin ,

It's not hard to travel through Canada with your handguns, and easier for your long guns. I do it all the time when traveling from Juneau to shooting the Alaska State and Territorial matches. Just follow the rules. If you decide to shoot in Alaska and not sure what to do, I can help.

 

Everyone should travel to Alaska at least once, and why not shoot at the same time!
