Suby's are among the highest rated cars on the road, and have a fair price to go with them. Never had an issue with either of ours. I do ALL of the maintenance on our vehicles. OLG My 1st new car was a 1981 Toyota Corolla SR5. Everything before then were all used US built cars and pickups. My Dad bought a new Toyota Hi Lux pickup in ....I think 1971 and in 1980 (again I think it was) a new Toyota Starlet for my Mother. He had well over 280,000 miles on the Hi Lux and when they sold the Starlet that had just about 200,000. My Mother wanted a car with an automatic trans. I traded my SR5 in on a new 1983 Ranger 4x4 that a few years later was traded in on a new 1985 F150 4x4. The LAST new vehicle I bought was a 97 Expedition. That got traded in on the 2000 Mercury(lease turn in). When I bought the Expedition it was in late 96. That cost $2500 more than the 1st house I bought in 1976 for $29,900. Talk about sticker shock. Now I'll hang onto what I have. I can't see getting rid of the Escort unless the doors fall of someday. Why spend $30k and up for something that gets worse mileage. OLG...I know what you mean about the sewing machine. My "boss" sews and quilts. A close friend has a dedicated "Quilting machine" . It has a 5 foot arm for doing larger quilts. I think she paid somewhere in the $6k range for that. Think of all the guns they could buy for $6k...hmmm.

Couldn't sell it out of state? It's painful for me to think of an RX-7 being crushed. I cried like a baby when mine was totaled.

Too much electronics and too ...make that very too many sensors. All it takes is ONE of the right sensor's to say...ok...enough and you'll end up sitting by the road waiting for someone to tow you home... Exactly. Last summer while Jeeping some fairly dangerous trails in the Colorado Rockies a friend with a 2016 Rubicon Jeep experienced a wheel sensor failure. A $28 plastic part in a wheel somehow made contact with something else in the wheel it was not supposed to and screwed up the entire computer because it was sending a false signal to the computer that the computer could not diagnose thus the computer pretty much shut down the engine and four-wheel drive system. That little part combined with that computer malfunction would not let his Jeep do anything safely. We had to pull fuses until we figured out how to keep the engine running but disabled every part of the traction control system that was being shut down by the faulty part. Jeep screwed the pooch on this one. Being stranded in a Walmart parking lot is one thing but relying on a computer in an off-road vehicle to safely navigate somewhere dangerous is another thing entirely.
The Original Lumpy Gritz Posted January 16, 2018 Posted January 16, 2018 Charlie-That sewing machine cost about the same as my last Shiloh Sharps did. She married me, and only God knows why. I really think she lost a bet------- Bought my CJ-7 new in 1985. Still drive it everyday and has stock carb etc. I have redone the entire drive line, as I like to 'play' in the rocks. The biggest issue in the CJ pass'n PRK's, SMOG, the replacement components are very hard to find these days. The other deal is, the IDIOTS here tightened the SMOG specs up in 2011, to tighter specs than when the Jeep was sold. A CA certified catalytic converter is now model specific, with a SERIAL NUMBER(just like a gun). They are dang pricey too-- If it wasn't for our all of family being within 50 miles of us. We would be liv'n in Montana now. OLG
Utah Bob #35998 Posted January 16, 2018 Posted January 16, 2018 I made sure our new car did not have any navigation features. I know how to read a paper road map.

OLG I guess we're a hick State because our primary occupation base is agriculture. We don't have smog tests here. About ...guessing....90% of the farmers and ranchers take or did take the cat's off of any new car or truck they buy. During the summer when it gets hot here a lot of grass or grain fields were going up in smoke because the cat's were hot and started the fires if they drove into or along the field...especially just at or before harvest when the grain is about ready to harvest. Things got and get REAL busy in a hurry when that happens. I've helped my Uncles put out more than one of theirs and neighbors grain field fire when cats 1st came out on new vehicles. Once they figured out why the fire started...the cats didn't live long on new vehicles. I know about the family thing OLG. Not sure how you'd adjust to -30 and lower during the winters here after living in Cal for so long. We do get "Chinook" aka warming SW winds off of the Rocky Mtn. front that changes the temps. A week or so ago we went from -25 to +27 in about a 12 hours span. It's not uncommon to stay below zero 20-40 below for a week or two then the next day it's be 40-60 above and the snow starts going away. We're in a pattern like that now. Not the -20, but it was -15 the other day and the rest of this week the guesser's are saying 40's above. It still beats Minnesota in the winter. I lived and worked outside there every day for 32 years. We also have open carry and getting a CWP is pretty much a snap here. I had one in Mn. and when I moved back here the Sheriff looked at that and a copy of my FFL and issued me one.

Utah Bob #35998 Posted January 17, 2018 Posted January 17, 2018 Hit 1,000 miles on the car while in town yesterday. I was surprised a voice didn’t say, “Congratulations! You have successfully passed the 1000 mile break-in period” I guess the car’s not as smart as I thought.

Much sooner than I want to be. The cars I'm considering are the Mazda CX9, Mitsubishi Outlander or the Ford Explorer. Is there anything else I should consider? Thanks. ****************************************Updated 1/19******************************************************** Well, the techs at Mazda North America must what they are doing. They recommended a fix to the dealership and it seems to have worked. I've only had it back for a couple of days but it's running better than it has in years. Uno says that's a good thing because it will have to last me for at least 300K miles now. Thanks for the advice. I'll hang on to it in case my situation changes. What was the issue you were hav'n(besides Uno)? OLG

OLG The low oil/oil pressure sensor kept coming on, even though the oil levels were fine. The dealership replaced the sensor a couple of times, as well as running several different tests before contacting Mazda North America. {They had my car for two weeks.} The fear was it might be an electrical problem, which is almost always fatal in today's electronic vehicles. Whatever the fix was, it seems to be working so far. {No they didn't disconnect the light because It lights up every time I start the car.}

What did Mazda say they did? OLG
Calamity Kris Posted January 21, 2018 Author Posted January 21, 2018 They did reset the computer. They also changed the weight of the oil I need to use. I was told because of the age of the car and mileage, 14 years and 180K respectively, there was enough wear in the cylinders for them to be out of tolerance, triggering the sensor. This was a much less expensive fix than resleeving the cylinders.
The Original Lumpy Gritz Posted January 21, 2018 Posted January 21, 2018 What weight oil were you using? What weight are you running now? BTW-It's NOT the cyl out of spec. that causes this. It's worn main and con-rod bearings that is the main reason for OP loss. OLG
Calamity Kris Posted January 21, 2018 Author Posted January 21, 2018 I had been using 5/30 synthetic. They put 15/40 standard in it. Thanks for the info. I thought I probably got the analysis incorrect.
