July Smith
I have been watching the classifieds and gunbroker looking for a 44-40 rifle. No spending money so just looking for now and keeping an eye on the used market. I have noticed a few rifles listed with what seem to be extra screws in the receivers. Anyone notice a few extra holes in the pictures? Anyone know what they are for? To me, they look like they are about where a saddle ring loop would go, but not sure. Are these carbines converted into rifles or did Uberti make them this way? Just for your information, both the 1866 and 73 are 24" rifle versions. Chili Ron
Howdy, Just take em out and toss them. Then you will see what they are for. Best CR
July Smith
Umm... Okay... If I end up buying a rifle with the extra screws I am referring to I guess that is one way to figure it out. Here are two other pictures of Uberti 1866 and 1873 rifles. Notice how the receiver above the trigger has two fewer screws than the rifles shown in my original post? I was hoping somebody could explain what those extra screws do.
grey ghost
The action was drilled for a saddle ring. It became a rifle so they plug it. There is a 44 and 73 rifle for sale on here now with the a saddle ring even. It even happened with originals from time to time.
Church Key, SASS # 33713
Grey Ghost posted the correct answer. I had a 66 with these; then the original owner found the saddle ring and I put it on. It's long gone and I now miss it. Church Key
