Nothing wrong with that at all. It was several years after I had retired from the military before I considered an AR, and then purely because it was a good deal. I had a Mini-14 for years before that though. However, for going out to the range, taking camping, or what have you, I prefer a lever action all day. And yes, I like wood over plastic, except on an AR, since I know someone will post a pic of one here shortly...

So I decided to duplicate the build with the exact same components. I bought a lower receiver for the build. I have found that it would be cheaper just to buy an upper than to build one. Weird. I agree that these days you can save money using complete upper with an AR15 build. I used a complete upper from Brownells for my 300BO build. The only reason I got interested in the AR platform is because I saw the way the CA Legislature was moving and decided I should get a couple before they were banned completely. Now I just need to finish converting them to be "featureless" before the end of June. It's great - by making them "featureless" I can go back to the designed magazine release. Go figure. Had to throw that challenge flag, didn't you? That, because of the grip, would have to be registered in CA as an "assault weapon" before the end of June. Here is a featureless, CA compliant AR Neither of these are mine, by the way. I'm going with this style of stock:
