Looking for a source of quality taps and dies. Specifically need a 10-48 die. Struck out at Brownells.

I buy all my metal working stuff from MSC.  Probably the largest supplier in the US. Have full line of qualities. I usually buy the best.

They are the best.

Check McMaster Carr.  I've got about 6 tap and die sets. The best set, most durable, has been a craftsman set I bought probably 30 years ago I suspect the current stuff is not as good as this "vintage" set.

Several cheaper sets I've bought are so brittle the taps break easily. So stay away from Harbor Freight or Northern Tool and the like.

I've bought specialty taps and dies from McMaster, such as left hand thread stuff.  Reminds, me, I need a 1/4-20 left hand tap and die for a tractor build project....

I highly recommend Titan USA for quality taps, dies, drills, and most other tooling. They are usa made and last much longer dollar for dollar than other brands I've tried. I recently ran a job with over 350 tapped holes 1/4x28x1/2" on the mill and made it through with one tap all power tapping. I get Titan USA products from a rep that comes through my area once a month or so. When I can't deal with him I'll use mcmaster or fastenal.

Just today I opened a package from fastenal that was supposed to contain a 7/8x14 tap but I chucked the tap up and went to tap a 13/16" hole. The tap went cleanclean through the hole without making contact. I then measured the tap and it was actually a 3/4x16 tap even though the package and the laser etching on the tap read 7/8x14. Luckily there is a local fastenal where I could bring my grievance. They refunded my money $65, ordered me a new tap, and let me keep the mislabeled tap. Not a plug for fastenal in fact I think in general they are next to worthless but at least they were willing to fix the problem.

Thjanks so much for all the info. I am working on a project with a machinist at work and the odd thread pitches used on guns came up. Being as work furnishes all the expendables such as bits, cutter heads, taps and dies he hasn't had to buy any for a while and his normal go to source didn't carry things like 10-48 taps and dies. I could find taps at places like Brownells but diew were another story.

I knew the collective knowledge here would save us a lot of time and allow us to purchase what we needed without having to drive into DFW.
